Road Tax

Featured Replies

probably an old topic but  I am puzzled about it. I know that a 2010 1.6 diesel Octavia has zero tax and likewise a 2015 the same. So why is a 2017 1.0 tsi  taxed at £140.  Seems like its an emissions issue but I would never have thought it applied to the 1.0 petrol 3cylinder. Can someone enlighten me on this.   Thanks.

They change the bands all the time and they're only going to get tighter. The diesel is probably lower on C02, which is what they judge on rather than particulates etc.

Right ! ok  thanks Jimg  but there's another, a ford fiesta 1.2 4cyl petrol is only £30.  Its not turbo charged, that might be to do with it.!

The bands are set when the car is manufactured, so my Diesel VRS is always going to be £30, even if a car with the same spec will be charged at £140 in 2 years time.

Until they likely have another overhaul and say that all cars manufactured before a certain date fall into one or two categories, shortly before all cars with a combustion engine are effectively taxed off the road.

No. Its based on date of first registration and CO2 emission subject to review anytime, but usually in the yearly November budget. Likely to go up I'm afraid.

I believe you are indeed correct, which is why I shouldn't go onto forums when I'm trying to work...

Really? There's no sign of a pre 2017 car on £30 tax changing significantly that I've seen.  I certainly can't see it being increased to the current new car £140.

2017 and the kidology of £0, £20 & £30 VED ended for some.

As on the 12th November the grant for Hybrids end in the UK.

Monday's budget might have some more surprises as the WLTP results show just how much nonsense there is with some 2017-18 Euro 6 C02 g/km figures & vehicles trucking about with low VED.

Philip Hammond MP did say last budget about things being as they were for another couple of years but now that the cheating has really been shown can he ignore it.

Maybe not hit the VED, just the BIK and Business users.

Fair enough, but just think what an increase from £30 to £140  is in percentage terms.  I think it's politically really difficult territory.

With tax - I'm afraid the only way is up:crying:

Since the changes in April 2017 no longer any incentive to buy a new diesel car so myself and SWMBO are enjoying the refinement and decent economy (41/44mpg) from our current petrol powered Skoda's.:inlove:

Road tax on my 200PS 2010 VRS  £290

Road Tax on my 245PS 2017  VRS £140

So lets not forget that not every car in the pre March 2017 regime is/was taxed at £30. Something quite mundane like a 2004 1.6 Petrol Citroen Picasso is up around £250.

Poor fellow, but at least he's entitled to free parking....:giggle:

I read an article on the car tax changes a while ago and I can't remember off the top of my head, but said article was explaining how the government was losing millions of pounds because people had been encouraged to buy lower emission cars because of the ever increasing pollution levels in towns and cities because emissions are causing a strain on the NHS with oodles of people with respiratory issues. This then meant cars were either band A, B or C (£0, £20 or £30) and the government wasn't getting the revenue it needed, mainly for roadworks, new speed cameras and other delights.

However........all cars now are £140 (£450 for 5 years if the car's list price was over £40k). There's no reason to buy a lower emissions car now, so there is the potential for there to be an increase in emissions, thus increasing the potential for there to be, still, an increase in the admissions of people getting respiratory issues caused by the increased pollution levels.

The second part is a bit cynical I'll admit, but the first part is definitely true.

He / Philip Hammond MP said he was not going to hit White Van Man / Woman but just new diesel car owners with vehicles not meeting the newest standards.

'Real world test results'. (even though the newest standards were Euro 6 and not Euro 6 d temp.

Obviously the fact that White Van Man / Woman might have cars that he would hit went over his head.

Monday will be interesting to see who is getting hit as the Duty / Tax is not going up on the costly fuel already getting in more Duty & Tax.

VED is a small part of a cars running costs. Cars lose thousands of pounds in depreciation and use thousands of pounds in fuel. The argument that because VED costs a couple of hundred pounds more over a three year period is now a negative for low emissions vehicles is, in my opinion, utter nonsense.

We’ve all heard someone someone say after buying a new car “Oh, Road tax is £30” like that is some massive saving. Yeah, sure. You’ve spent £21k on a new motor that’ll be worth about £10k at trade in come three years but you’re right, £30 Road tax. You’re quids in...

If it had a low VED that was supposed to be because it had low emissions so that would be low fuel consumption as the 2 are tied.

Better fuel economy would be lower running costs if true even if buying more expensive cars.

But that was crap as was discovered, and is even more crap as discovered with WLTP, still nothing to do with cars loaded with people and luggage as some are.

Tax the Fuel Higher and drop the VED to the length of the car or something, the room / weight on the road.

Road Tax for driving and Fuel Tax on how much fuel is bought.
