Boost problems

Featured Replies

Hi guys new here. I have a no 1 vrs and I went to the shop the other day and the car was fine, then on the way back I have no boost at all. However I can still hear the turbo spooling through the exhaust. Any suggestions before I spend a fortune on a mechanic? Thanks in advance

@Mikegilford - When you lost boost, did you hear a pop or bang sound? Are other drivers giving you "make less smoke" signals?

If so, then you've probably popped a turbo - intercooler - intake manifold boost pipe. The plastic ones that come out the back of the engine on the offside, then go down into the bowels of the RHF wheel arch.

Hi sorry mate been away. No I don’t have any excessive smoke, nor did I hear a pop or bang. I literally started the car after going the shop and it’s not boosting. However I have noticed my intake is t bolted to the manifold as it’s missing it. Could this have shook the pipe off the turbo? If so how easy/ complicated is this to do? Thanks in advance

@Mikegilford - OK; I'd say you need to replace the missing nuts, studs or bolts, and quite possibly the manifold gaskets. You need advice from someone who can do a physical inspection.

Sounds like someones robbed parts off your car :o Could anyone have had access to it ?

Pipes can pop off but never heard them go totally missing.....photo would be useful here. Its not easy for any of the stuff to just pop off like that unless it was assembled by unqualified chimp.

Having had my new turbo reassambled I can contest some of the pipes are very tight fit like on the turbo to EGR, you don't half notice trying to get that on and it would't just drop off. The VW turbo clamps can pop off but even if they did would only be at one side and the pipe would remain in place.

I the pipes aren’t missing, I think the pipe has come loose. I have a bolt missing on the top that holds the intake down.

Ok. They aren't usually bolts they are Turbo CLAMPS on the original setup, or VW clip connectors, so no idea what bolt you mean.

Where is it on this diagram

Unless you replaced with hard pipes......in that case you might have Mikalor style clamps to the silicone pipes ?
Do you have original or hard pipes ?

Sounds like just a basic boost issue mate, I had same with mine unltil I got the pipework sorted with my budget hardpipes installation as the silicon they sent on one side was poor fit but I got donated some cheapy silicones and sorted mine, boosts fine now.
Get it sorted you need it with no air leaks for the turbo to build the boost pressure obviously. It doesn't sound expensive, just not properly connected pipework then.

This is example of the intake pipe - should be no bolts - spring clamps on both of these sides of the metal clamps and even on the plastic pipe side too. Not aware of any bolts mate, other than the security bolts that secure it around the engine which won't affect boosting.
Any better explanation ?

Or you saying your whole intake is loose from the engine lol
That sounds bizarre / shoddy work for the whole thing to come that loose if so.

You will need to replace any missing bolts if you are lucky you can just replace any missing and tighen it up.

But with such poor setup as mentioned by Ken above probably warrants a more professional replacement if you aren't sure what you are doing. That said, I didn't find it particularly difficult expect removing the EGR bolts are quite a pain.

Probable clue as to the redundancy of your question in my "Location: Scotland"? The last time I was anywhere near Shrewsbury was 16 or 17 years ago, and I had a different car.
