Ignition button

Featured Replies

Has anyone come across a problem with the the ignition button not working. Sometimes it's fine other times you have to press and press to make it work.

Thanks

Yeti doesn't have an 'Ignition Button' that I am aware of.

I'm not aware of an ignition button on the Yeti.

Could you please describe the button, its symbol and its location?

Edit: Your car is showing as Octavia.  Maybe you've posted in the wrong section?

Some do if you pay the extra. Just have to have the key with you inside the car

I think it is standard On Australian Yetis

This is the system in high end cars which can be hacked to steal the car without a key.

Do you have the same problem when you press it to stop the engine?

My brother-in-laws 1.2tsi DSG Yeti has a start button.

It's the Keyless entry and start system.

Ah! Never had one of those.

The op has an Octavia so is the question relating to a yeti and if so which model?

Can you please clarify EXACTLY what car and model this query is about?
Your details state you have an Octavia but this is the Yeti section.

If you're talking about the KESSY engine start/stop button, mine has gone a tad intermittent twice over its life (now 4.5 years and 76k miles).

What works for me, is to carefully release the chrome ring from around the switch (a flat blade jeweller's screwdriver works), then get an aerosol can of electrical cleaner and give it good dosing all around the edge of the switch. I think the switch gets a bit of crud and corruption/oxidisation and this seems to do the trick.

How old is the battery?.

In my personal experience, if the key fob battery starts to go, the first sign is an intermittent reluctance to unlock the door. If you're talking about the main battery, mine is the original one and whilst a little slower to spin the engine over on the recent cold mornings is absolutely fine. The two times I have applied electrical cleaner to the ignition switch (because of the problem of the ignition switch needing a harder press or a press on a slightly different part of the button to engage the starter) it has been an instant fix. I last did it a couple of months ago and it was 18 months before that I had the previous problem.

The Yeti KESSY ignition is not 'press once for auto start cycle' (well certainly not on TIBET III) that is found on other KESSY models, it's merely a button that when depressed, engages the starter motor for as long as it is held in.

There is a fair bit of info on Google about this issue, throughout VAG models around the world. Initially, I thought about removing the switch as others had done (not on Yetis) to give it a proper cleaning but to get the steering column covers off would require the removal of the steering wheel. That was why I tried the electrical cleaner solution and it works a treat.

Hi all

Thank you all for the response just to clear up a few things the Yeti 2014 greenline is my wifes car and this car is factory fitted with a stop start button keyless ignition. We have been experiancing problems with the button not functioning all the time whether you want to start the car or stop the car it can happen anytime. I was just looking if anyother members have had the same problem and it seems its can be a common fault across the VAG group. I will try the electrical contact spray and see how we get on i have spoken to the dealer he wants £70 just for diagnostics (I know whats wrong why do i need diagnostics)

To be fair, you know the effect (it won't start or stop) but you do not know the cause (what is at fault). Hopefully the diagnostics will reveal why it is happening be it switch or battery etc.

The worst outcome would be a dealer guessing the cause by just lobbing parts at it until they land on the right solution - how many times has that happened (at the owner's cost!).

I wish you well.

Typo.

I can second the contact cleaner approach.

The KESSY button on my relatively high mileage 2014 Yeti occasionally requires pressing a bit harder to operate and I'd previously followed aerofurb's advice, to good effect:thumbup:

I can certainly confirm and understand your problem.

I have a MY 2015 Yeti 2L, TDI, 4x4, DSG with keyless entry and pushbutton starting.

On the first scheduled service (2016) I reported a frustrating intermittence with the push-button start (PBS)

Whatever they did seem to work (for a while). Then after 3rd service (2018) the PBS once again became a nuisance. It would eventually start but only after some 'repetitive pushing'. As I approach the 3rd service it has become even more frustrating and my wife has threatened to walk if I don't replace the button, "that's not just to the shops ".

My dealer is playing 'I don't know' (not many Yetis were sold in OZ) and three mechanics have declined to help. I have yet to consult an auto electrician. I will try the spray and see what eventuates.

This approach had previously worked for me:thumbup:

And it did for me, too.

Can recommend as 'solution' (at least an interim solution).

I will post again when it starts playing up again, so we get an idea of how long we can expect the quick fix to last.

P.S. I used the slightly more expensive WD-40 version of electronic cleaner ($17 from SuperCheap) rather than the $7 SCA version... - probably exactly the same apart from brand name....

Hi my Yeti 2015 has been giving the same problem for several months. it needs to be pushed real hard to start. We live in India and would like to know if any electrical spray would do the job or do I need to get a special spray for this purpose. Any guidance much appreciated.

Electrical contact cleaner.

I would just like to confirm that aerofurbs fix worked a treat on my Superb III. I used Servisol Super 10. After taking off the silver ring, you still cant see much aof a gap, but just spray the 'cleaner' around the edge of the button and you should be running again in no time!

I already had the car booked in for the specialist to look at it. This has saved my a fair few pounds.

THANK YOU !!!!!!

I'm with a 2018 vrs Octavia and I'm having the same problem. Can anyone show/guide me how to remove the silver ring at push start button?

From an earlier post in this thread.
