Petrol vs Diesel on a budget

Featured Replies

I'm potentially in the market for my next car (current MOT is up at the end of the year and I'm anticipating a bill which is larger than it's worth), but circumstances dictate that I'll probably only be spending around £1000 (I know that you really can't guarantee anything with a car at that price; it's the risk I have to take). I need an Estate ideally, though a larger hatch would be ok. I've had a Fabia SDI and two A4 Avant 1.9TDIs recently; all have been fantastic. I've always looked at Diesels because a grand won't get you a car with less than 150-200,000 miles and a well-maintained diesel engine can potentially do 250 - 300,000.

However, I only do around 8000 miles per year, most of it on short journeys of 5 - 10 miles - which isn't ideal use for a diesel.

There are loads of people on here with much more in-depth knowledge than me so just wanted to ask - given the budget and annual mileage, would you be looking at petrol or diesel cars? I'm leaning towards another A4, maybe an A3, and so far have only looked at 1.9TDIs but willing to widen the search if there's something better out there.

Thanks so much

That kinda running around...

Non turbocharged Petrol.

The diesel will just end in problems from never running at temp and you wont save on the efficiency of the diesel fuel as it will never be running at peak efficiency add the price gap on purchase (assuming UK) of fuel and its nonsensical to choose diesel..
