2.0 tdi faint metallic rattle when accelerating

Featured Replies

Hello again!

I'm not used to driving "oil" powered cars, so I'm unsure whether this is normal or something to call the dealer about... Recently I started noticing that under load (say, when accelerating normally in second or third gear) there is this faint metallic rattling on top of what seems like normal diesel engine noise. I also notice on occasions (not always) that stating the engine makes the car shake considerably. Could this be a sign of a failing engine mount, or something else that's not right? Car's only done 3500 Km... I do admit to stalling it a couple of times due to the 2nd gear being so close (laterally) to 4th compared to my other car, so I put it from 1st to 4th. Even my wife, who normally doesn't notice these things pointed out this rattle the other day, and I'm pretty sure it has not always been there... Any ideas? Should i just take it in to the dealer, as it's under warranty? I still haven't found the time to have them check the drivers side window, that also rattles on bad roads when partially open, so it could be the opportunity to have both things checked.

Cheers!

On another topic user kpappa reported a similar problem and says it was solved by refueling at another station, but in my case I only use the "premium" fuel from a reputed brand in Portugal (Galp). Unless they are selling snake oil with their "most advanced fuel ever", called evologic. Or maybe these engines like regular diesel better?

Sorry, it's been a while but I never got rid of this rattling noise. Took it to the dealer once as for told it's the injection. But I never heard this in a diesel! This week, by chance , I was hearing this rattling on an uphill and turned on the AC. Noise gone right away! Injection my butt!! If anything, turning the AC on forces some overfueling and should worsen the rattling. Cod it be a loose belt slapping around that then gets tensioned by having the AC compressor engaged? I'm taking the car back one of these days, I'm not leaving until they check it, and may well demand to watch the service being done. I also had some chirping when cold, they said they replaced the aux belt but I saw nothing in the engine bay looking like it had been touched. Probably just sprayed some wd40 or something, as noise Is back. These guys are unbelievable!!!

I have somethig similar on mine, also 2.0 TDI. It is some kind of rattle under load that can be heard through the dashboard vents. Very subtle, but it’s there. Turning on the AC makes the noise disappear sometimes.

Just an update for those interested. In my case it was a bad AC compressor. I showed the mechanic at the dealer the fact that the rattle disappeared with the AC on and they called me in for a replacement, at no cost for me. The car was out of the standard 2 year warranty but I had complained while still under warranty. Actually, I have 5 years warranty but they were not aware of it when they called me in for the compressor replacement, so pretty decent of them, though in the end they probably repaired it under the warranty.

Sorry to bring up this topic again, but it's been a couple of months since Skoda changed my AC compressor and all was fine, no rattle and cooled decently. But now I started noticing something I have not heard before: a noticeable hissing sound in the first few seconds after turning the AC on... It also doesn't seem to cool as well either. Could this be a sign of it being low on refrigerant gas already? This would mean they left a small leak left during their intervention, if it's low on gas so soon, right?

Yes and yes.
