my wife had the toyota mr2 on a E plate excellent condition very low mileage,

but she sold it to get the vrs furby we now own.

sold to her best friend who looked like the cat that got the cream.

Just remembered there is a Jap car on the household, well a truck. Nissan Navara pickup. 2.5 diesel turbo. Goes OK unladen, but pulls well under load (such as a busted Fabia on a trailer )

You can get some gorgeous examples for £9k with full leather, low mileage etc

Insurance is very good considering its the sporter version and when finances approve adding a turbo will see a healthy 200-220 bhp.

And fits my criteria: RWD, Convertable Roadster, and above all FUN to drive

I looked at MX5's a while back but was put off by the cheap feeling interior. The one to go for IIRC is the green one with tan leather and wooden steering wheel.
