DPF problem. Can I continue to drive?

Featured Replies

I have 2012 Skoda yeti Elegance 2.0 tdi  left hand drive. Live in France. DPF light has come on a few times and I have given car a good run and it has solved the problem. Now I have DPF light plus exhaust problem light and flashing coil light. Have contacted garage and think they will need to do a regeneration of the dpf. However can't get appointment till next week. 6 days. Need to get around still. Car runs fine but has limited acceleration, exhaust smells too. Should I not drive at all or can I keep going with short journeys max 50 miles for next week? I'm not at all confident with cars and mechanics so just need sound advice from those who have. Thanks

Don't drive it...

If the DPF can't regenerate it'll continue to fill with soot. Once the soot reaches a certain level it won't able to regenerate so the DPF will need removing and either cleaning or replacing.

Thanks for your advice. The diagram is really clear. I am obviously close to the limit. Imagine replacement is very costly.

As above - I wouldn't drive it at all until the garage carry out the regeneration.

Going by that diagram you're already over 40g soot loading (which is very high!) so you may only be a gram or two off needing DPF replacement.

I log my DPF behaviour (using VAG DPF - another thread about this) and on certain types of journey I could easily add a few more grams in way under 50 miles.

I hope it's not a long drive to the garage!

I'm assuming you don't have VCDS - if you did, you could probably carry out the regeneration yourself.

It does feel it might be worth buying a cheap OBD device to check the soot load before trying to drive to the garage.

If you have an android phone, the VAG DPF app is popular and works with a cheap BT adaptor. Otherwise, carista or obdeleven might be OK but I've never used either.

Carista doesn't feature DPF related information, at least on my 2014 2.0 TDi.

Thanks for all your advice. Have downloaded VAG DPF app. What is the BT adapter Pink Panther? I'm in France.

This type of OBDII adapter should work with VAG DPF: Amazon

I also have the genuine Carista dongle, which is a little more costly (@£15.99).

Just for interest - how many kms has the car done?

Interested to know what "parts" they intend to fit if it is just the DPF

surely they will try a forced regen before anything else - not sure about the Yeti, but with most of these (not too expensive) ODB scanners you can force a regen

Hopefully it's just a sensor or two that need replacing and the DPF soot/ash levels are still acceptable...
