Recoding after ECU swap-out?

Featured Replies

I changed my ECU today for one that has been recoded to give (allegedly) 140hp instead of the stock 105, there is another thread I started with details.

The new one has had the immobiliser disabled to allow it to be plug and play and everything went well, the car drives fine and seems to have more power when I need it but unchanged drivability in normal conditions.

When driving tonight I found that the cruise control no longer works, it could be the switch contacts again but I only did them a month ago, I am guessing that the ECU does the cruise control function and that it will need to be coded, I will have a look with VCDS tomorrow.

in the meantime my questions are:

Am I correct in my assumption, ECU needs coding?

And also are there any other parameters that may need changing according to the equipment fitted on the vehicle? - Its an Elegance.

Thank you in advance.

P.S. I have just recalled (I think) that the ECU carries the vehicle mileage and can be interrogated in case a vehicle has been clocked, my dash displays the correct 124k miles and VCDS was showing 200K kms (the same) for some of the fault codes that srung up from the fitting, will the new ECU carry the true mileage data of the original donor vehicle and can you remind me where in VCDS this can be found? - I have run across the function somewhere.

I would always check the coding and adaptions of any module when adding it...

Cruise control is certainly part of the ECU coding so I'd definitely check that.

First hit when googling for "rosstech ECU mileage" brings back this page this might help: http://www.ross-tech.com/vcds/tour/EDC-15-Mileage.php ;)

I got the cruise control working, it was not through coding but somewhere else on the menu and it needed a 4 digit code to enable it, Youtube was my friend.

Using the mileage check function it shows 200K miles from the donor vehicle which I suppose is now increasing for every mile that I drive, the car and the old ECU were at 122K miles, no problem as i dont intend selling and if I did then the spare ECU would go with the vehicle.

Really pleased with the remap, feels no different to drive except I dont need to downchange on hills like I did before, it will now pull from tickover in 5th gear without shuddering, seems more economical (will know when the tankfull is used) and definitely has a lot more poke on the few overtakes I have done, gives me confidence that the power is there when its needed but otherwise unchanged.

good point though, tomorrow I will check the coding against my printout from the old one, when I looked it all seemed correct, there were only a couple of variables.
