Boot rattling...

Featured Replies

Yet another annoying noise coming from my car, and only noticeable when driving along a rough track to see my horse.

metallic rattling is coming from the boot area. It sounds like the boot “catch” is slightly loose, and is rattling around, a sort of dull metallic rattle.

is this a possibility, or anything else to look at on the boot

shock mounts?

Locking wheel nut key rattling around in the spare wheel well?

Check the rear exhaust heat shield under the back of the car. Mine came loose and started rattling and it sounded like the rattle was inside the car. The combination of alloy shield and steel fixings causes galvanic corrosion - i.e. big bloody holes :tongueout:

Spot on, the fixings have fallen through the large holes!

is it possible just to get a new screw and larger washer to hold the shield back on? And more importantly to stop the rattling annoying me!

The clips just push on. They are part number N90335004 and are available on ebay. Example...

You could definitely make or find some washers to cover the holes. Personally I removed the rear heat shield altogether. It's not really necessary.

10mm long socket and small hammer is ideal for fitting

Yes, but, unless you make up repair washers to cover the holes in the heat shield and fit them (made out of tin cans, drinks cans etc), fitting new retainers will not hold these shields up - they will just fall down through these existing holes.

Edit:- or just pass over the new retainers because the material at these points has "gone" as explained by TMB.

I sorted the heat shields on one or two of my cars by cutting out repair washers out of very thin steel/aluminium.

True; I've actually repaired exhausts (atmo cars) using soup or beans cans, a couple of Jubilee clips, and a couple of exhaust bandages.

It won’t be for a while before I get to having another look at it. Can anyone tell me off the top of their head what type of screw/fixing will be holding the original retaining washer in place?

The retaining washers are just pushed on to serrated studs which are welded to the floorpan. The retaining washers just grip onto the serrations on the studs.

Cheers.

what would be the suggestion to get my soup can lid to attach to the stud!

They won’t be big enough anymore, the original “hole” on the shield has corroded so it’s larger that it was

Yes they will. You drill a small hole in your tin lid then trap it up against the heatshield with the normal star nut thingy.

Like this: (but my tin lid isn't a tin lid)

Boot shut fully- I've had it when SWIMBO lets something get trapped around the lock area and I know it by feeling the boot release as in this case the release is sloppy.
