Intermittent multiple bulb failures

Featured Replies

Good afternoon,

Has anyone ever had 12 bulbs fail simultaneously, and then come back online without any corrective action? A couple of failures were near side rear indicator, front offside indicator, numberplate illumination, reversing, brake, offside dip beam and a couple of others. Current train of thought is possible dampness somewhere, failing earth, or, slighty more off piste, one of the rear dual filament bulbs failed or failing. The last one fron mk3 escort experience many, many years ago!!

VCDS scan shows individual failures but no commonality.

Any ideas greatly received.

Should add that this is on the estate, just to make sure there is no confusion.

Sorry can’t help you but my octy2 2005 is moaning about OSF headlight then you drive down the road and it’s working again. I swapped the bulb and the new one doing the same. Annoying.

Battery replacement needed perhaps always throws odd errors on cars. Well documented here. A type 096 from ABS eBay will only set you back about £60 for a 4 year warranty. And fits perfectly, albeit oversized compared to factory. That’s a diesel spec one.

Gav, battery only 6 months old and this fault has occured twice within the last month, hence the "damp" train of thought as the weather down here recently has been pants.! Your issue definately annoying, could it be the holder loose?

Might be worth adding your autoscan to see exactly what the faults are.

At a guess, it might be a fuse issue. I'd check the engine bay fuses are secure and clean as water ingress isn't as uncommon as it should be :/

Langers,

Checked and all are dry/secure.

Took the dog out and the defective lamps went down to 5 errors!!!. Have checked all the lamps in the rear nearside cluster as status reports all 4 errors in rear nearside, the 5th error was a service due message, and all appear intact. However, the upper red side light glass appeared darker than the rest. Unfortunately my fluke has gone walkies so cant check the actual resistance, that ill have to do tomorrow. From your experience, could an intact lamp filament, but possibly of a high resistace, cause such an odd fault?

Just a thought - are all the failing bulbs connected via a common harness point, such as the feed that goes to the tailgate which exhibits failures to fatigue failure of the wiring?

Good point, another area of investigation tomorrow in daylight, I did look for a common earth point but must admit, failure of the actual wiring loom did not cross my mind.

Sure, if a bulb is about to fail, the electronics might be able to detect it even though the bulb is still working. It's certainly done so in other peoples cars.

I wouldn't expect one bulb to cause the original 12 warnings or the 5 warnings you now have. It feels much more like something which would be common to all such as the power feed to the control module or the ground point. Given it started with 12 warnings, it's more than is fitted to any individual light cluster so I wouldn't expect a single ground point fault to cause that many codes.

Obviously there could be more than one fault ;)

An autoscan showing the original 12 and current 5 warnings would be great. At least it should help narrow down any shared power/ground feeds.

With a break in the weather, scanned with the results below. Further observations:-

Set off for morning dog walk, 9 errors!! Returned from morning dog walk, 9 errors indicated initially, however upon pulling into the drive, no faults indicated and all lamps working.

That looks like a power issue to the BCM. Feels like it might still be a loose fuse or water ingress in the fuse box.

It would also cause the bulb warnings shown :-)

  • Author

If the fuse, no12, 5A I believe, was affected by water, would that not be a short cct as opposed to open cct? The fuse box itself was bone dry and the fuse good. There was a little moisture below the actual box but nothing of major concern. Currently no faults and all working again.

If the power input was disconnected due to a bad/loose connection, I'd expect an open circuit fault as above.

If the power input was grounded, I'd expect a short to ground/short circuit warning and the fuse to have blown.

I'll try and check a wiring diagram tomorrow to see if that gives any clues. 5 amps seems too small for all those lights.

I would suggest you take a good luck at fuse 16 (30a) in the engine bay. From the wiring diagrams and owners manual, it's responsible for powering most the right side lighting on the car so fits with your fault codes perfectly.

It might just need the connector cleaning up and squeezing slightly to ensure good contact. Check for micro-fractures in the fuse too as they can cause intermittent failures.

The one you mentioned (fuse 12, 5a) seems to be for the CAN gateway rather than the BCM :)

Langers,

many thanks for that, tomorrows job. I'll have to update my info as well.

Another good test would be to clear the faults then remove the fuse and see if the same ones come back, that should confirm if it's a likely cause.

Langers,

If I ever get over to your neck of the woods, I owe you several pints!!

Fuse 16 was the issue. No moisture no damage, however, the fuse blade on one side of was dull grey, just heavy oxidation, quick rub with the edge of a coin, replace and all was well.  As you suggested, cleared the faults and scanned to prove all was good. Removed the fuse and re scanned again but cleared all the faults. All bulb faults cleared, but the fault indicated as terminal 30, remaind as expected.

Again, many thanks for all your help.

No worries, glad it appears to have been something simple :)

if you would like to see some examples of logical fault finding in modern vehicles, have a look at youTube South Main Auto.  The guy does great videos of fault finding and the logic behind what he is doing.  He's personable too, which helps make them watchable.

Well done on the fuse.

Canders and Langers - I have many pints for both of you.

I had the identical problem to you Canders: 12 light faults (in seemly random locations) all appeared spontaneously one day, then disappeared after an hour of not driving.

They then failed again recently, a few weeks later, and had remained like that the past few days.

I literally just tried copying the same fix of taking out Fuse 16, cleaning some dullness/light corrosion with contact cleaner and some fine grit sandpaper and incredibly all the faults disappeared!

I am absolutely gobsmacked how easy a fix that was.

So sincere thanks to you both for the post and the solution respectively.

Cheers!

Great result @PanoramicSounds - glad to help and that it was a nice easy fix :D

Hi all, I'm a new member directed to this site by Google after experiencing the same issue with our newly bought 2010 Octavia Scout. Not sure of the exact number of failures but it was at least the o/s headlight, one front side light, one rear sidelight, rear number plate light, and two indicator bulbs, during a period of heavy rainfall here in Wales In 40 odd years of motoring I've never experienced anything remotely similar. Very pleased to find what I hope will be the answer on here and will be attending to it later today.

We don't have a manual for the car so I was wondering if anyone might be able to tell me where the notorious Fuse 16 is located? Thanks in advance of any help.

Wow, that's great thanks, I'm guessing the one I'm after is in the engine bay box rather than the Climatronic fuse 16 in the cabin, thanks very much indeed for that info. 16 looks a bit lonely up there with only 17 for company.

You're welcome, let us know how it goes.

I'll be giving it a go in the next hour and will send an update, thanks again.

While I'm on, the missis is complaining of a low frequency noise at low revs which has started in the last couple of weeks and which I'm guessing must be exhaust related. Is this a common thing with these cars? We've only had it a little while. It's a 2010 Scout CRD, with around 93,000 miles. We love it apart from these minor issues.
