Usefulness of the blind spot detection system

Featured Replies

Getting ready to order the 1.5 4x4 DSG, as soon as they put it on our list.
I'm wondering if there is any point in speccing the blind spot detection system, considering the tiny alarm lights while the side mirrors are quite large and may be all that's needed.
So, do you find it useful?

Must add that I'm 74 and not very good at looking over my shoulder... :)

Oh! OK, you mentioned alarm lights that's all.

I've found the system very handy. The lights are small enough so that they don't catch your eye when you don't need them, but they're big enough to be useful when you're manoeuvring.

Yes,' warning lights' would be a better term, I guess.

I find the blind spot detection system the best thing since sliced bread ! If you happen to indicate whilst a vehicle is in your blind spot the warning lights go from gentle flashing to "absolute bananas" flashing, so you can't miss 'em. IMO they're that good they should be compulsory fitting on all cars, so "Agedbriar", spec them soonest is my advice.

I read that there is also some resistance in the steering wheel if you indicate and attempt to change lane despite the warning.

Have you ever experienced that an how does it feel? Could that cause a panicking reaction?

There is certainly resistance and it surprised me when I first encountered it.  I have only experienced it when moving back from the overtaking lane when I think the system is a bit more cautious than I would be.  I have learnt to deal with  it and stay out a bit longer than I would have in the past.

Depends on how easily you are panicked? Very useful and it is strong enough to make you wake up to what you are doing.

I nearly got run off road overtaking someone who did not have this useful feature, they failed to check and hit me... So yes maybe all cars should have this feature...

OK, thank you all for your advice.

So, the blind spot monitor stays on my options list.
