BBZ engine airbox restrictor/Venturi thingy

Featured Replies

Hello folks,

So, while I was cleaning the insides of my Fabia 1 BBZ engine air filter housing, this piece broke off and came loose from the intake. Since one of the tips holding it in place broke I just took it off the airbox, and now the air intake diameter is bigger (less restricted) than before. It looks like the sort of piece you would like to get out of the way to gain some performance. I wonder if any of you knows what this does and if it's good/bad to take it off.

It looks like a restrictor plate, a turbulence/scavenging device at best. I have noticed neither negative nor positive effects after its removal, just a tiny little bit more induction noise when I give it some beans.

If no sizeable effect comes from this part (which has no part number/serial number whatsoever) I wonder why did VAG bother putting it in there in the first place.

I haven't found technical explanations about this device, or its inherent function, how does it affect airflow, etc.

I can't visualise where in the air box that has come from? Was it attached to the part you remove when changing the air filter? Or hidden under that part, attached to the main body?

It's an intake silencer to reduce induction noise.

@Wino Circled it for you.

@sepulchrave That confirms my suspicions. Since my car's insulation is basically none it makes no difference, induction noise is only noticeable at WOT anyway.

I guess I can do without that particular part. It's not like my Fabia were an ode to refinement, I got more annoying noises to be worried about.

Thank you all for your assistance.

Thanks, I'll have a look at mine in the next few days.
