Roof Rail Removal - pain in the you-know-where?

Featured Replies

Hi fellow Karoquers!

I recently had a roof wrap (shiny black) and thought they'd done a reasonable job given that removal of the roof rails was difficult (to say the least) because of the fact that, as I understand it, they have to be un-bolted from the inside which would require at least part-removal of the roof lining thus possibly interfering with the air-bag sensors (so I was told), maybe voiding the warranty - and being very expensive.

However, on super-close inspection during a thorough wash yesterday, I'm not happy with what the wrappers have done.

It's certainly not a mess and it looks OK if you're not close up.

But as people on this forum already know, when it's your 'baby', you want it to be as perfect as it can possibly be.

And it's not :crying:

I don't want to go back to the same place because I'd get the same deal again.

So, initially, I'm just interested in any thoughts/ideas from any Karoq owners who've had any experience with or knowledge of roof rail removal.

I've Googled around and not found anything over a considerable number of searches.

Not vital, but that's why I'm on this forum 'cause you guys (and girls) are super-helpful!

Cheers

I don't know if this will be helpful - but if Karoq rails are anything like Roomster rails, they will be fitted and removed from outside the car with no requirement to drop the headlining.   Mounting bolts on the Roomster are hidden under covers at the front and rear ends of the rails.  Might Karoq have a similar arrangement?

Hi Robjon - thanks for your input

Sadly, according to the company which wrapped the roof, they couldn't access and remove the rails directly, so they contacted Skoda and they confirmed that, for whatever reason, the Karoq's roof-rails have to be undone/removed from the underside of the roof

Some new fangled safety thing/whatever.

Thanks anyhoo

Same for the Kodiaq.

Post us some pictures and we'll be able to tell you it looks fine

Ha - thanks silver1011!

You'd have a right laugh if I posted the close-up pics of where it's not quite right - almost microscopic - but it's my "baby" and I want it to be perfect.

Why oh why did Skoda think it was a good idea to make it so you can only remove the roof-rails by part-removing the darn roof-lining

I can't bring myself to call my 'local' dealer - they'd probably just laugh and present me with an astronomical bill if I wanted them to take the rails off so as to not void the warranty, and then, with the roof lining hanging down, I'd have to take it to a different body-wrap mob and then take it back to Skoda to get them to re-fit the roof lining.

All just so's I can get the roof-wrapped properly :x

The things we do for our cars :cash:

Far from helpful, sorry, but I noticed that the SEAT Arona can be had with a black roof from the factory, Skoda missing a trick..?

Dropping the headlining isn't as bad as you might fear, as long as its done properly.

Decent car wrappers should be able to do it with their eyes shut.

I remember early on in one of BossFox’s threads where he only noticed afterwards what a cowboy job had been done when he de-wrapped the car. There were cut marks in the paint IIRC.

Don't cha just hate that?

I've possibly found somewhere which sounds pretty 'pro' who do stuff like this (dropping the headlining) to wrap roofs quite often.

Fingers X'd:thumbup:

Step away from my car :D

Hello GKodi. Very disappointing for you. I suffer from the same over attention to detail and once I have seen a lapse in standards I just can't unsee it no matter how hard I try.:o

Just a thought - have you looked into having the roof spray painted ? There was very little price difference between spraying and wrapping so I went with the spraying/painting. May be different in the UK but here in the Colonies it was $400.00 for wrap and $450.00 for respray. Far more robust finish but of course it is permanent although I suppose it can be resprayed back to original.

PS : They didn't remove the roof rails just masked them off and sprayed.

Food for thought NZPete.

For me, I like the fact that, within a few years, the wrap can be peeled and the roof 'put back to normal'.

The quote I got for a 'proper' wrap today was around the price you were quoted.

Watch this space - and thanks!

Do you have any photos of your roof wrap?

TIA 👍
