Gearbox trouble (Advice needed)

Featured Replies

Today pulling off I couldn’t select 1st or 2 but every other gear worked fine, waited for the rac man to arrive and he said it wasn’t a gear linkage etc. But when moving it down the road to park it up reverse also went? Do you think it could be a selector fork problem? As I need to source a new gearbox for Friday just trying to explore my options. If anybody has a gearbox for sale that they can deliver to stone house by Friday that would also be great!

Sounds like linkage failure to me, get someone to watch the top of the gearbox while you move the gearstick.

Yeah the RAC man, had me select gears whilst he watched the gearbox he said it’s internal, just really don’t want to have to get a new gearbox. But Taking the gearbox out id  rather replace and get it back onto the road

Is it an SDI?

Then you're in a world of hurt, the gearbox is rare and fragile, secondhand availability will be non-existent, better to get yours rebuilt.

It’s better for it to be rebuilt but the value of the car is just not worth the expense for me personally

Ok, sell it for spares or repair then.

Your options are extremely limited.

Get the gearbox code off the data sticker and search ebay for breakers selling one.

Try manually engaging the gears from under the bonnet after releasing the cables, its probably just the something astray in the linkage or it needing needing resetting, assuming its the same as the Octavia there are plenty of Youtube videos on how to do it.

Dunno where Jason (Devonutopia) is these days. Gearboxes are strong but certain areas of the selector mech inside the box are rivetted. With a lack of TLC or sympathy, these can break. In extreme cases, the shrapnel can then total the whole box.

Get a spare off the eBay or a local breakers.

A gearbox, clutch and a nice big bill the car is back and running again, feels good to keep a VRS on the road as most people just decide to break them theese days.
