Cambelt change - 4years or how many miles?

Soon to be new owner of Superb MkIII, 2.0 150, 3 yr old, 90,000 miles.

Dealer telling me its 130,000 for belt change. Can anyone confirm, don't like taking chances with the belt. I have a years grace but concerned it may be 80K and not 130K

 

Also does anyone have a service checklist showing what needs changed and when - apart form the standard air,oil,fuel pollen filter etc.  Can't find anywhere. Like to do a bit myself and local indy for any skilled tasks

I would budget for getting it done ASAP. Seeing as how you do not know how the car has been used other than doing high mileage per year.

Brake fluid change due at 3 years old as well and then each 2 years.

?

Does the windscreen look ok and not star spangled?

Thanks.  Star spangled? Not sure how this would look but looks ok to me. This a common fault?

 

If the belt was officially at 130k I was planning on doing it before 100k in the next 6 months but will be wary of it. But if it's 80-90 would do asap

Just realised this comes with 6 months/6000 mile with the dealer not 3rd party.

As a backup would I be covered if the belt went within this as he made out it was due at 130k.

If u havent got it in writing then u cant have it covered.  Mine is a tsi so its chain driven and they keep changing intervals on belts...  Speak to a skoda dealer who can confirm. 

If in doubt get it done

Sorry, that one caught me out. I thought all vag chain designs had all been dropped but on googling it looks like the 2.0tsi is indeed an EA888 gen 3 engine with chain(s).  :o

 

 

Lol, yeah its basically the mk7 golf gti engine..... 220hp and the 280 is the golf r engine.  

When we bought the 1.4 TSi in the Leon the dealers did not have a clue about cam belt change intervals. I like to have an idea what maintenance is going to cost over my expected 5 years of ownership and they said that all VAG belts (diesel and petrol) were 3 years or 30,000 miles. Did not believe them for one moment simply because a high mileage user would be changing the belt every year or possibly sooner.

 

So I e-mailed Seat and this is their reply. (Skoda should be similar, actually should be identical since they use the exact same engines).

 

"I am delighted to confirm that on your SEAT Leon, we recommend the cam belt is first checked at 60,000 miles, and every 20,000 miles thereafter. If there is no damage at these points the cambelt will not need changing. If the belt is not changed, regardless of condition, it must be replaced at 120,000 miles or when the vehicle is 5 years old, whichever comes first."

 

My question was about the TSi but I was subsequently told the same applies to all VAG engines.

 

At 90,000 miles your belt should have been inspected twice, wonder if it has been.

Rule 1 All dealers are liars.

 

Rule 2 All dealers are liars.

 

Rule 3 Refer to rules 1 and 2 above.

 

VAG dealers offer a 5 year warranty on new belts/pump and whilst they may charge a few £'s more than a local indy they will only give you a minimal warranty (probably expires as soon as you drive away). In my opinion its worth paying a bit more if you are keeping the car.

This was a lease car so I'd say it got everything possible done when going through each 18k Skoda dealer services it got, so guess the belt was checked at least at 60k

Just spoke with local dealer who tell me 5 Years or 140K for this car which is good news and I have written (email) stating that any belt related failures are covered with 6 month dealer warranty.

So happier now, have a bit of a buffer now to get it done and wont be sweating it when driving next 6 months :)

Just on the belt and pump, would you avoid any belt brands? Would any of continental, dayco or gates be good enough. Or who is the Skoda genuine part manufacturer

Same for Water pump - anyone know who is the skoda apporoved manufacturer for this?

As I said above I would avoid getting the work done anywhere other than a Skoda dealer. The saving you make will be minimal and you will not get the 5 year guarantee. The fixed price on the Skoda site is £499 for belt and pump.

Go to a different dealer. £499 is the Skoda Fixed Cost Maintenance price, your dealer is trying to rip you off.

Good plan, thanks for the heads up.

Checked the site, apparently these are the max prices too for fixed maintenance ' ŠKODA Authorised Repairers are free to offer prices lower than this offer'  Worth chancing it. Wonder do Skoda do Black Friday!!

Hi, also curious what you mean about a star spangled windscreen. I've got a couple of marks on mine and some scratches. Can anything be done to buff them out /repair them?

I mean simply a windscreen that has you blinded by the lights sparkling through the tiny chips and imperfections of a motorway mile muncher.

My screens are terrible not from the miles covered but just from where parked near a quarry and getting sand blasted regularly.

Many cars doing high mile or just normal miles can get a new screen on occasions through breakages. 

I have bought cars before that i checked the screen and thought they were OK until the first time the sun was in the position to show me i was wrong.

 

I have 10 months to go driving my Motability car and the screen is terrible, it has been for the past year.

If i was to be buying it next year it would need to have an accident and the screen replaced before then...
