Map update for Columbus

Featured Replies

Hi guys!

I have for a long time been thinking about getting a map update for my navigator.

Can I download it somewhere or do I have to buy a DVD with updates?

If I can download it, anyone know what version I have to get based on my current installation?

Do I need to update the firmware before? Who knows?

No, your firmware is already one of the latest versions for the unit. If you are going to download the map update yourself, you will need a dual-layer blank DVD to write it to.

Ok, thanks! Good to know.

Hopefully someone can point me to what file I should download, since I have like no clue at all.

Is it RNS510 I should look for?

Yes on the RNS510.

Engine running while updating or not?

Not necessary.

Can I have the engine running if I need to? We have winter here, and the battery sometimes is really weak... when it's really cold.

Just put the dvd in and let it update.

If you turn the car off mid update, it'll continue the next time you use it :-)

Yes, as Langers says you can just insert the dvd and forget it, it'll stop and start as you drive or park up, and will continue as required.

Since I wanted to update my maps in one go (without interruption), I connected my battery to a battery charger. Then started the update process, and came back every half hour to keep keep the Columbus awake. Left the trickle charger on all night, just to be sure that the battery was completely charged the next morning. This works really well, and you don't have to keep your engine running (or worry about not being able to start the next cold morning).

Would there be a problem saving to an SD Card and updating from that?

Yes, it won't work.

There is a way of using an SD card to update the maps, but it involves a specific software update procedure which may cause issues.

Thank you guys, it worked like a charm for me. Updated it in three turns as we were driving to some places.
