Couple/Few questions gearbox clutch related

Featured Replies

Morning all ,

(car O7 FAB Boh 1.9tdi axr)

1. my first question , my gearbox is the JXY variant , can other coded gearbox's (5 speed) fitted with zero issues?

2. Whilst the car is under acceleration there is a slight rattling, when I press the clutch, it ceases. When I release the clutch & accelerate the slight rattle remains. When the car is stationary with the engine ticking over , when I press & depress the clutch there is zero rattles or noises of such. Originally I thought it maybe the release bearing, but when I've had release bearing issues with other vag cars, you can hear the difference when stationary at idle & with operating the clutch. So that's why I'm wondering if its gearbox related. Hence my question 1, as the JXY gearbox as a used low mileage unit seems rather expensive compared to others.

3. Are all fabs 1.9 tdi's factory fitted with the dual mass flywheel? I 'm aware how expensive they are & was contemplating a single mass conversion.

kind regards,

Mark:wondering:

I've got an 07 Mk1 Fabia elegance estate fitted with the 1.9tdi (AXR) unit at 59k on the clock.  My gearbox code is JDA - earlier models (with the ATD engine code) were fitted with either GGU or EWT code gearboxes - either of these I'm led to believe are straight swops for the JDA box.  I think the JXY gearbox was offered on the first of the Mk2 Fabias from 2007 onwards and have no knowledge of what if any changes they had over the preceding codes and whether they would fit the Mk1.

When I got mine it had a gearbox issue - crunching when selecting 2nd gear from higher revs.  Surprisingly this was rectified by simply replacing the gearbox oil with genuine VAG oil of the correct spec - when draining the old oil I found that the oil had been low - there was no evidence of oil leaks so assuming it wasn't underfilled at manufacture it must be weeping into the bellhousing. Sadly I think the low oil level has damaged 5th gear as I get a 'howl' on overrun from 60 down to 50 (ish) mph.  I expect to pull the box at some point at which point I will have it repaired as in all other respects its fine -  trying to find a good low mileage gearbox for the Mk1 Tdi Fabia is nigh on impossible now and in any case you would still be dealing with an unknown quantity whatever the seller says.

You should have a single mass flywheel (I think only the VRS with the 6 speed box had a dual mass).  That being the case I wouldn't think your problem can be flywheel related.  My money would be on the clutch rather than the box - but it would be well worth changing the gearbox oil (use VAG genuine stuff) as a first step and see if there is any improvement.

Thanks gelertd for the reply.

As an order of priority i’ll change the gearbox oil first and then see if the issue is still occurring.

I read on this forum the other day where to find the details of the build of your car. It’s a white sticker on the inside of the service manual & stuck to the boot floor near the spare wheel.

As im sure you’ll be aware of this sticker and it’s info content. It was from reading  that info on the sticker that indicates my gearbox is the ‘JXY’ and my engine is the ‘AXR’

So I googled the JXY and found that it’s fitted to mk2’s & I think mk3’s (although not 100% on the mk3’s)

And then I had seen the prices on them , to say the least I was supprised.

Whether my car was one of the few to be flitted with the JXY AXR combo, as the first registered owner was in June 07. Obviously the car was made before that & probably sat in a large compound waiting to be delivered to a dealer.

I think its a dual mass too, I’ve rang a few garages & told them my reg etc, the cheapest I found was £595 for a 3 piece clutch (LuK) and DMF fitted which I thought wasn’t to bad.

But it before I commit to that , i’ll Change the gearbox oil.

Is the gearbox drain & fill still the large large hex bolt type on the front & underside?

Usual keep the car level rule & fill up to the line on the filler hole?

any idea of the amount of oil?

Regards,

Mark.....

You really only need to top it up, changing it won't give you any additional benefit, the fix is having a high enough level because gearboxes are splash lubricated.

Genuine oil is part number G060726A2 - if you change it you will need 2 litres. I bought 3 litres and put a little more in (c. 2.1 litres - see below)

The location of fill and drain plugs sounds correct (make sure you can undo the fill before draining the oil).

Level surface is required although I must admit I jacked the front of the car up to 'squeeze' a bit more in.

Useful to know that the JXY gearbox was fitted to the last of the Fabia Mk1 tdi's - widens the scope for replacement.
