2.0TDi 4x4 - rear noise / hum

this only started this week, but within 1k miles the noise from the rear of the car is getting pretty noticable at 50mph +. I've tried to work out f its a wheel bearing or the rear diff / haldex. Going around corners the noise seems the same as when on the straight. when I have had failed bearings in the past, doing this would either increase or decrease the noise - showing me what side was failing.

 

Could this be the rear diff and if so - what options are there and how much to replace in ££

Could also be tyres but at 1k I'd be really surprised.

likely the tyres are sawtoothed, a common problem with octys. Run your hand round the inner edge of the tyre and see if it feels raised unevenly between the tread patterns.

 

mine were really bad and the noise was unbearable.

i've got winter tires on -but had them on before the noise started and they are pretty new. if they are saw toothed - how can that be fixed?

 

 

Has the Haldex had an Oil change in the last 30,000 miles / 3 years.   Or the diff had an oil change?

could also be the rear propshaft rubber doughnut - they can cause droning..

My 4x4 VRS drones a little from the rear axle similar to the additional noise you get with winter tyres fitted, and other 4X4 owners have reported it too. It's always done it (38k miles to date). Once you have tuned into the noise, you can't not hear it but am I worried at all - Nope! It still works fine and corners quicker than the FWD siblings!

 

It's most noticeable above 40 mph as the Front/Rear torque balance shifts. Thats with both winter and summer tyres on. It gets everso slightly louder the more worn the rear tyres become as they wear faster than the fronts and consequently rotate the rear axle and drivetrain quicker than the front when driving in a straight line. Rotating tyres front to back softens it off until the rears have worn down more than the front again. Tyre wear is perfect with no abnormal surface characteristics btw.

 

I guess you know that Winter tyres also vibrate against road surfaces more than summers due to the additional siping for mud and snow clearing/grip and just add to the noise. They also get slightly noisier as they wear in after being fitted from new.

 

A Scout owner has reported suddenly not hearing the rear axle noise at which point he noticed the 4X4 also wasnt working on low grip surfaces. New hydraulic pump required. That is the only total failure I have been aware of so far. Another Briskodian with a VRS 4X4 also had several rear diffs both new and used fitted under warranty in a bid to eradicate the noise. They all did exactly the same though. Therefore its a characteristic, not a problem.

 

I previously ran a Saab 93 with Haldex 4 fitted for 7 years and 96K miles. Now that was noisy with lots of backlash throughout the drivetrain and far more worrying from an owners pocket perspective. Other than dodgy electrical connectors to the rear diff causing occasional lock and release judder under power on 2 very separate occasions, it worked fine with no issues for me. Octy 4X4 is a much better performer, noise or not.

It sounds like your saying it will wear rear tyres quicker than fronts?

 

The system is biased to the front with 5% going to the rear (iirc) and distributes more to the rear as required or as it anticipates spin.

 

Or have I misread /mis understood what you were saying?

 

I swap between winters and summer tyres and have never noticed any vibration on my Scout.

Is this on a MkII or MkIII Scout?

Last year I had a similar problem with my 2.0 TDI 4x4 (2014). It was caused by rear diff, which had to be replaced completely. The humming noise was very noticeable at speeds over 80km/h (50mph). I tried to figure out the problem for about 6 months, but in the end it was the rear diff. The oil in it was filled with metal shavings. At the time the car had 150 000km (~93000 miles?) in it.

New, complete, rear diff at the time was 4500eur + labor. I bought a used one for 1800eur. Of course the prices in UK can be completely different.

The problem got some attention with other users in Finland too, and it seemed to be surprisingly common. If you are worried about your rear diff, I would start by inspecting the oils in it. It shouldn't be expensive.

Hi all. Got a 2019 Octavia Scout with 23k on the clock. Just had front and rear tyres rotated (and tracking checked)  to even out wear. Now noticed a slightly audible whine when decelerating (coasting) from 70-75mph. Disappears at 65mph. No other issues experienced with handling or traction. Any ideas??
