light behind speedometer failed

Featured Replies

I can't always see what speed I am doing as the light has failed. Sometimes it flicks back on again but not very often. I have taken the car in to get looking at at the dealer but they can't find the problem. I don't want to be squinting to see what speed I am doing at night and would like to get this fixed. Anyone have any ideas how to fix this?

The car's illegal without. Get them to sort it ASAP.

Yeah thats helpful advice that mate  .

AFAIK the fabia cluster is illuminated by SM LED's which unless you have a good skil of hand with a soldering iron could pose a problem.

As it keeps flickering I would be more inclined to think a loose connection was your problem. Withdraw the cluster and check the security of the 2 plugs on the back.

If the wiring is the same as the Octy, it'll be on the same fuse as the glove box light...so if the glove box light isn't working, it could be a loose fuse or similar...

Not sure if it is actually illegal to drive without a back-lit speedo...it's not illegal to drive without working headlights, so not sure why the speedo illumination would be a legal requirement...

I'm assuming it's under warranty - if so don't go anywhere near it yourself - get them to fix it.

The whole 'dealer can't find' made me assume it had been in once.

I'm sick of dealers making people believe warranty work is at their discretion, it's not - they're legally bound to fix faults such as this.

If there's no waranty - dunno!

Oddly, it's an MOT fail if not illuminated but it doesn't have to work!

It is under warrenty and its been sent to a dealer once already. I'm going to take it to another dealer and hope they can fix it instead. If not I know someone who is good with a soldering iron and may get them too look at it.

thx for replys.

...And invalidate the warranty. DON'T DO IT!

Call the first dealer and get them to fix it - don't accept no for an answer. As stated the terms of the warranty LEGALLY BIND THEM - it is not your responsibility to resolve this issue once they've had a look.

Yep - pin the dealer to it. If it's a new cluster required then it's circa £400 - £500.

If you knacker the cluster then you are in trouble as the immo info is stored in there.

Also, given the liability of driving at night without an illuminated speedo, I'd recommend telling them to keep it until they've fixed it, and request they provide you with an alternative (roadworthy!) car - either coutesy or rental - for you to use in the meantime...

If you have a GPS like a Garmin etc you could always use that as a spedo, more accurate too. But best get it fixed ASAP :)
