Gearbox Oil

Featured Replies

Does anyone know how much oil my gearbox holds I was planning on changing it tomorrow I'm assuming this is take the battery off time to refill Thank you in advance.

I did mine when I first got the car, it holds about 2 litres. On the 1.4 mpi there is no gearbox drain plug so I had to use a suction oil remover through the filler hole.

I only say it as I lost some today when I put in the new reverse light sensor could I just drain via that hole then do I just fill till full ???

If you just want to top it up you can just top it up until the oil trickles out of the filler hole. If you want to drain it altogether, yes you need to suck it out of the filler hole.

Sorry I did not explain well I meant is it easier to suck the oil out from the sensor hole,do you also happen to know what size the hex fitting is for the filler please ???

I will have to dig something up to suck out the oil I guess.

The drain plug is 17mm hex.

I suppose you could drain it out of the reversing light switch hole but not sure that you'd get it all out that way.

True I will stick to what you recommended thanks

I remember when I did mine that I didn't have a 17mm hex bit so I used the head of a 17mm bolt and used a pipe wrench to turn the bolt.

Seems like it's a 002 type gearbox, here's a comment about draining: follow links on the left to other pages that might be useful.  Unfortunately the 'Chapter' internal links don't work.

If your car was built before October 2001 it might have a drain plug?

Good point, I'd forgot that early ones have a drain plug.
