19" Wheel and tyre replacement

Featured Replies

I have a 1.5 TSI Edition with the 19" wheel standard fit shod with 235/40/19 tyres.

I have found a seller that has a set of black Skoda 7.0J H17 rims for sale.

I am happy that they will fit my Karoq however the winter tyres they come with are Pirelli 225/50/17

According to Kouki Tech and there tyre size calculator, the smaller tyres have a rolling radius of 206.34cm compared with 210.68cm on my current setup.

This would mean my speedo would under-read by 2.1%

Q1 - Are these new rims and tyres compatible as a straight swap.

Q2 - If I reset the vehicle tyre pressures via the infortainment system will this negate the speedo under-read.

I know this has been asked numerous times on here before but each time the question involved the use of a deeper sidewall replacement tyre

The standard 17" Karoq rims are-

Wheel dimensions: 7J x 17“ ET 45

For tyres:
215/55 R17 (4x2)
225/55 R17 (4x4)

I’m running 17” winter wheels in place of my OEM 19” wheels

6.5” x17” ET38

215/65 x17 tyres

to get a very close match on diameter.

Yours have a diameter that's considerably larger (711 mm vs. 668) than the factory supplied 215/55 R17 on Karoq 2x4.

There are indeed wide variations, so it’s important to check all the details for a replacement wheel/tyre combination.

Not just overall diameter, but the wheel offset (ET figure), the centre bore diameter so it clears your hub and the wheel bolt length to ensure they project the same as the OEM bolts.

That’s where the comparison site helps figure out the key points.

This time I bought genuine Skoda wheels from dealer, but I’ve bought used VAG and non-VAG wheels from small ads in the past.

For a 75 yr old, you've not lost your marbles! I suspect @BoxerBoy is quoting rims and tyres for his Kodiaq rather than a Karoq.

I think you may have misread things. I assume you mean diameter and not radius.

Smaller wheels will turn more for any distance travelled thus the speedo will over read not under read.

I use this site. Although it is not metric you can see the speed comparison difference is minimal, under 2%.

Thanks for all of the various replies however; I still don't have a definitive answer to either of my questions.

I understand that the tyres are not listed on the Skoda spec sheet but that doesn't necessarily mean that they will not fit?????

If it isn’t listed I think it just means that Skoda hasn’t got type approval for that size.

You don't tell the ET of the rims you have offered.

If the ET is same as the original Karoq rims ET45, then you get using 225/50 tires more space to the arches (the diameter is 10mm smaller) and the tires are 5mm closer the suspension and stick our 5mm more. When speedometer reads 60mph (96.6km/h) actual speed will be 59.1mph (95.2km/h): 1.5% slower.

They fit, if the ET is right, but they don't look visually good.

The car looks to have too small tires.

As Sanqhar writes they are not approved by the manufacturer, if you have some driving problems with those, you might be on your own. The Skoda UK might refuse the warranty repair.

Indeed, I have recently played this game for my Kodiaq.

My point was simply that the OP must just carry out a few checks to figure out which combination of wheel & tyre will match his OEM set w.r.t. diameter, offset, general fit.

And suggesting one of many web sites that can help achieve this.

I’ve played this game numerous times on all my cars in recent years, using both OEM steel and alloy wheel plus non-OEM wheels found in the small ads.
