New Glow Plug Still Have Starting Problems

Featured Replies

Hi All motor engineers.  Skoda Superb Mk 1 2.5 tdi. Had new glow plugs fitted four days ago and everything fine starting on the button (no smoke etc.).  Yesterday started have starting problems, it was taking a lot of turning over to get it to start.  When it did start there was no smoke of any colour. Any ideas, only once started goes like a dream.  Please Help.

Something may have been disturbed while changing the glow plugs or it could be an unrelated issue if it has always been fine before.

Who did the glow plugs?

A respected local garage that I have used for years.

Sounds like fuel issue, was the fuel filter changed? Might be an air leak allowing fuel to drain back to tank?

Most modern diesels don't require the glow plugs to start. Unlike petrol engines the glow plug are mearly an aid to get the combustion temp up for first ignition. After that they are redundant. A lot of engines will start with them disconnected. As above I'd be looking at fuel supply.

Not quite true, glow plugs stay on post starting for a considerable amount of time compared to pre starting to get the best combustion possible at low temperatures

Shirley this is to aid efficient combustion?  Not required for actual starting or running?  I had an old laguna estate 2.2d with all 4 plugs bust.  used to start first time in all weathers.

Thanks to all motor engineers for taking the time to reply.  I had new glow plugs fitted and went to collected the car and for what ever reason it did not want to start, and when it did the smoke was just like an old diesel train.  So I took it to a garage that specialises in diesel engines.  To cut a long story short after diagnostics he fitted Fuel pump, fuel filter, Fuel non return valve, and although this was nothing to do with my problem a new timing belt and all the normal things that go with it.  This was not a cheap job but my car is 2007 with 78000 on the clock and one previous owner.  11 months mot, just had brakes and disc on the front previous, and the glow plugs.  This is not a blame game the first engineers equipment couldn't pick up the problem.  The upshot is the car has never run better, starts on the button but if someone is doing the work for you it is not a cheap job.  I hope this helps any other member make the decision the repair or scrap.  Thanks Again
