1st gear and reverse a bit clunky

Featured Replies

I've got a Skoda VRS. It's done 128000 miles with very little problems.

Now I've got a problem with it going into first and reverse, it's a bit clunky but only when the engine is running.

It also sticks a bit when I'm trying to take it out of reverse.

I watched the linkage reset video on you tube and followed it because it was a quite easy thing to do but my mechanical skills are very basic.

It didn't help the problem.

My mechanic is getting old and wasn't interested he suggested scrapping the old girl!! (he just wants easy jobs to do, I need to find a new mechanic)

The car drives fine, I would just like to get to the bottom of the clunky gears problem.

you need to do the shim mod. easy enough to do the parts needed are around £10 from a main dealer

Thanks JW. I'll try to get the shim and give it a go. It doesn't look too hard to do.

I replaced the hydraulic oil in my 2006 vrs gear shift now very smooth, mines done 106,000.

My mate fitted the shim for me. It's a bit less clunky and comes out of reverse easily now. (1st gear still a bit clunky though)

Is it easy enough to do?

Have you got a link to any videos?

I had a look at bleed nipple and it looks as if it hasn't been touched for years. Maybe it's never been changed. 2006 as well.

Got the Skoda dealer to do it to make sure if there were any problems I would have some come back and to ensure the correct oil was used. Apparently its a case of removing the drain plug and leaving it to thoroughly drain. The plug is magnetised to attract any loose metallic bits They don't recommend flushing the system which is what I originally asked them to do though having watched some u tube videos on the subject the consensus seemed to be that it's not a good idea to flush it.. The gear box oil breaks down over time.

It doesn't sound like a difficult job as long as you don't strip the drain plug fitting and fill it with the correct oil. Sorry I've no video on it.

I'm sure there are others on here who have done it for themselves or do it as mechanics. Open up a new topic requesting info.

Confusion here between hydraulic oil, as used in the clutch actuation system, and gear oil, as used in the gearbox.

Boatman is talking about gear oil, I think.

With mention of a bleed nipple, you must be thinking of clutch slave cylinder, @Lusset?

Thanks for replies.

The shim has made it better and it's not sticking in gear. Thanks for that JW

I'll just leave it as it is and hopefully it doesn't get worse.
