Is it Possible to Retrofit lane assist

Featured Replies

Hi all,

i have an Octavia 3 auto DSG that allegedly has HBA. It doesn’t work so I’m wondering does it need lane assist to work ? My interior mirror looks like the mirror in my old octavia mk 2 - that had auto dimming but this one on the mk3 seems weak (it will dim if you cover the sensor in daylight but needs excessive light to work at night).

would like it to work, any ideas how to fix or retrofit if needed ?

Anything is possible with enough money but unless you have the skills to do the install yourself it is not practical to retrofit lane assist. Is the car displaying the little A symbol for HBA? Is the light assist menu ticked in the settings? If not, then HBA is not coded in and would need to be. If so and it’s not working then the HBA sensor may be faulty; you need to scan the car to see what faults are present.

Save your money and your time don't bother. Had it as standard on my car for 17 months and probably used it twice, because you have to keep your hands on the wheel or you get a warning sign flash up on the maxidot unless you can find someone to remove the warning I just would advise against this mod or in time you will regret it. Find something more useful to spend your hard earned on. As pointless as Skoda Connect IMHO.

It's a pain in the arse. Don't waste your money.

Even Tesla require you to keep hands on the wheel. They are assistive technologies, you still need to drive the car yourself, hence hands on the wheel.

I've used similar systems on different hire cars, they are great, wish my car has it. Only a PIA if you don't indicate when changing lanes.

Mine shows as having HBA on the dash, just never comes on, should be getting the car back Friday after someone ran in the back before Xmas - doh !

dont remember it showing any faults though. Will have to double check that though.

I use Lane Assist a lot when on motorways, definitely useful in my opinion.

But yes, I can see why some people do not like it. It only works for around 12 seconds before the computer starts beeping at you before deactivating.

You just need to give the steering a nudge and it will carry on working.

I think the camera is part of the rear view mirror unit. I didn't have HBA as it was ridiculous to pay the dealer to add it. Instead a friend of mine (Audi owner) used VCDS and enabled it for me.

He used the VCDS codes from this forum to activate.

The system is there to prevent you drifting. Not take over the stearing part of driving altogether. Pretty worrying that a complaint of the system is that it beeps at you.

Drifting only really works on RWD 1000bhp Japanese cars on a track with a nice long open corner to play with. Drifting on public roads would be dangerous.:giggle:

Have it on my Octavia, and have it turned off. It's fine if you drive in the gutter all the time, but on country roads round the dales you spend most of your time over the white line, and the bloody thing keeps telling me I should move left where the walls and hedges live.

Conversely, I've just activated High Beam Assist (for the wife, but not me) and it's pleasant to know that the car remebers the settings for each key, and turns it on when she's driving but leaves it off when I'm driving.

Do you have to have lane guidance for the high beam assist to work ? Is the hardware the same for both ?

Don't need lane guidance. But they both use the same camera so if you don't have the camera then it's gonna be hard work getting either to function.

No. I have HBA but no lane assist. Recently found that I don't have the hardware for lane assist. Hardware that comes with lane assist can be coded for HBA but not the other way.

Does your hardware for HBA just look like a regular interior mirror with auto dimming / anti dazzle ?

I have HBA from the factory (highly spec'd demonstrator) but no lane assist camera. Yes, it just looks like regular mirror auto dimming sensor, the sensor is not mated to the window.

There are 2 types of camera large and small. HBA can use the LA camera not the other way around. LA and traffic sign recognition need the big camera (looks like a triangle in the winscreen), HBA does not.

LA is meant to catch you if you make a mistake, not drive the car for you. For that, it is good. It would catch you if you fell asleep or had a heart attack, if it did not avoid it completely it would make the ensuing pile-up a lot smaller.

I use it occasionally, but don't find it that useful. the number if times it follows the wrong line and goes off at a tangent means I don't trust it. More relaxing without. it is worst over lines that have been blacked out and painted over when the sun is low like this time of year.

Lane Assist is a good aid if you do a lot of motorway miles, other than that it’s a nice gimmick, which came as standard. IMO a far better quick and  ‘Free’ VCDS upgrade is HBA,  making night driving on A roads more relaxing, especially in combo with the auto dimming interior and wing mirrors.

Does anyone here have a picture of the HBA assist sensor on the model without lane assist please ?

I can get one in the morning if no-one gets there first.
