Steering feels “wrong”...

Featured Replies

Ok so title is a bit rubbish... however driving up the duel carriageway, the steering doesn’t feel quite right.

I can’t rwally describe how it feels, the best is sort of a cross between being light, and how a car feels when you drive it on a windy day.

its going into the garage on Friday, wondered if it’s worth getting them to check the wheel balance and/or alignment

Suspension/steering/tyres need checking over first. Wheel alignment can only be done if everything else is OK, otherwise it's a waste of time and money.

Wench,

How did your Fabia do in the garage?

Mine has the same feeling with the steering. Some passengers said it's bushings

The garage didn’t find anything wrong when then had a look over it.

however it’s going in Monday for a proper check over too see if they can find anything wrong with it

I bet it would be fine if you fitted new tyres on the front wheels, Fabias are very sensitive to tyre wear, I have no idea why.

@Wench

So what is the story on the tyres.

What are fitted, what size, what have you got the tyre pressures at?

Thanks Wench,

I'll be watching with interest next week. Mine too has the test soon. I put new shocks in the back and new door lock motors on both rear passenger doors. Still have to fix a none-working reverse light. If it didn't have an excellent engine I would get rid of it

The fronts will need changing at some point, depends on what the garage says on Monday when I get them changed

Then that is why the steering feels 'weird'.

They are near the legal limit but not there yet.

There is also something wrong somewhere in the front as it’s making a knocking noise.

There is a thread last year or earlier when another owner complained that the steering sticks in the straight ahead position and requires a little effort to turn the wheel. Sometimes my Roomster feels like this and the steering feels a little stiff sometimes making it a bit tiring on a motorway journey and I sometimes drift towards the white carriageway lines. My front tyres are new and the tracking is spot on so an inherent characteristic.

Knocking will be ARB related and won't affect the steering.

Tyres that worn will be all over the place, Fabias hate worn tyres.

@edbostan

  Maybe inherent characteristic with the tyre brand / type and size you have fitted.

  Or because a fitter never learned about runout stripes.

Wench,

I just had a good look at mine  around the front wheels.   It is my bushings. And it looks like they all need replacing. I'll bet yours is the same. Have a look for cracked/split/displaced bushings

I had the ARB bushes done last month.

there were some more rubbery bits that needed replacing,  but getting them replaced depends on if it’s them that’s the cause of the knocking and/or if the car is likely to pass it’s next MOT.

Front rear console bush had this symptom when mine were knackered .

I ve had cupped tyres more recently due to shocks seizing on rear, when rear wheels put to front this caused car to veer to left, even when car was tracked.

Track rod ends would have to be very bad and would cause a loose , delayed action to steering.
