16" Winter tyres on a TSI 220

Featured Replies

hi,

i'm sure this has been asked before, so i'm sorry if it has!

at the moment we have a mk2 2.0 tdi 170 superb estate with 16" alloys which have our 205/55/16 winter tyres on.

I'm assuming that the bolt pattern has not changed between the mk2 and mk3, so my only worry is that the brakes will be bigger on the 220 stopping our tyres from fitting. at the mo the mk3 has 235/45/18 wheels on in SEL DSG Guise.

Would anyone be able to hazard a guess as to weather our 16"'s will fit, or if i am going to have to go bigger.

Thanks

The circumference will not be correct with the dimensions you mentioned - in fact this difference (5,8%) is illegal here in Norway but I dont know your laws in England.

hmmm, hadnt even thought about the rolling difference.

i know it was pretty close between the 225/40/18 and the 205/55/16.

hmmm, better go find an online calculator

I must be missing something obvious but I cannot see anywhere on that web page where you can enter tyre sizes for comparison

My understanding is it's the wheels that are critical to get over the brakes. A 16" wheel isn't. I have 17" as my winter wheels on my 2.0TSi. I'm certain the chart below details the wheel/tyre/offset combinations that fit and also whether you can use chains or not:2009834153_Screenshot2019-01-24at13_12_47.png.bfe5cbafd4311650d47b45994374cc76.png

Go bigger is the answer.

@pj101 is bang on the money.

I too came from a 170 Superb II but to a 280 Superb (same front discs as 220).

Discussions about tyre size are irrelevant as 16" rims simply will not fit.

I sold my 16" winters here on Briskoda.

Yep i also had this issue haha... When i got my 220 sportline. I ended up getting a set of 18" cassiopiea of however its spelt.

The 16" rims will not fit on a 220. The brake disks are too big in diameter. Minimum for a 220 is 17"

I had a golf gti performance pack mark 7 and now have a 272 Superb.

17s are a tight fit on both!

We're talking fag paper clearance!

17s or above only

What size winter do peopel recommend then?

Am on 235/45/18 and I'm struggling to find right sizes in other sizes to avoid messing the Speedo up too much

Is a 2.4% difference acceptable? (245/40/18)

Keep to the OE sizes.

I certainly wouldn’t fit wider tyres than std for winters.

Yes this is perfectly fine

Just found some cheap Audi 17" et45 alloys, the ones in the attached piccy.

Should they fit, or do they need to be et40/41?

They will be perfect, most of the Superbs have ET44 anyway.

What size is the centre bore?

I had to buy some spigot rings to go from 57mm to 66  mm.

well bought them, waiting to put them on now and see if tyre fit.

215/55/17 is going to have to be the size, what tyres do people recommend, i have used Michelin alpin 5 before now, unsure if i should just got for the alpin 6 or if the skoda collective know of a better alternative.

thanks

I’m on about my 5th or 6th set of Nokian’s and can’t see me using a different brand anytime soon.

I also have nokians wr a4 i think they are
