Advice on mods and performance

Featured Replies

Hi all, only just joined. Driving a late 14 plate Octavia VRS TDI DSG and looking for advice with future upgrades. Owned my VRS since April 2018 and after many debates with the wife (shackle n Chains), I’m looking to put some money into my beloved car.  To summarise I need advise On the following, please bare in mind I’m working off an effordable budget having to support a small family, mortgage and expensive season ticket... not forgetting the beer fund.

- Suspension. (I want the stance to lower but not really low, if you know what I mean).

- Tuning. (stage 1 ideally but what else shall I change to compensate).

- DSG tuning. (Any one had this done and is this worth it)?.

- Front splitter. (Recommendations).

This is my second Ocatavia, first was a 2010 1.6 tdi which I purchased as a family car not long before my wife gave birth to our only child. From that point just fell in love with the Skoda badge. Before my love affair I was a JAP freak and owned a 06 Civic Type R Premium addition with HKS Racing induction before wrighting it off in a immature driving situation.  After an expensive insurance bill I bought a swift sport 08 and again seeked the HKS induction kit, although the power dropped it was still a really fun car to drive. The veriale valve timing was so sweet when you hit that power band.

Looking forward to the responses.

Regards,

Luke

Hi Luke,

I'm going to follow this thread as I own a 2013 Octavia vRS TDI Estate (Manual) and I'm interested in other responses regarding suspension and splitter

I think alot of people go towards the H&R suspension route as it appears a nice balance between stance, affordability and ride comfort.  The serious fanatics go for a full coil suspension setup (but that's usually expensive).

I had my manual vRS tuned by Darkside Developments using a rolling rode to design to map for my car, rather than an "off the shelf" map.  It's a Stage 1 and designed for stock parts.  I love it! my car is a very different machine both in terms of torque and general drive-ability.  I don't try to thrash it everywhere, but it's good to know the extra punch is there when I want it.

DSG maps usually compliment an ECU tune.  The map changes the behavior of the gearbox, keeping it in the desired gear for longer before the car looks to shift up.  You might lose 1-2mpg with the higher revs, but it makes for a much smoother experience, especially with the extra power from your Stage 1.

Splitter - I've seen hundreds of posts on here where people buy from superskoda.com or an eBay equivalent (specific page for splitters: http://www.superskoda.com/Skoda/OCTAVIA-III/Front/).  I'm looking into this also, so keen for others to perhaps share a picture of what they've bought on your thread, along with a link perhaps? ;)

If you do upgrade your parts - don't forget the pics!

Have a look in the Octavia projects section for inspiration, or at @Ant-Vrsand @JohnnyType2's motors.

My order of preference would be:

1. Remap or DTUK tuning box

2. DSG remap or again DTUK TCU flash

3. DTUK pedal box

4. Eibach or H&R springs (about 40mm drop)

5. Wheel spacers if using std wheels, wider wheels or lesser offset if not

6. Rieger or Maxton Design front splitter

7. Rieger rear diffusor

8. Superskoda colour coded Skoda badges and debadge the rest

9. Black grille surround and mirrors if you don't already have the black pack

10. Tints if privacy glass not already present

Realistically it's not worth doing much more than a remap on a diesel, unless you throw £££'s at it with turbo, injector, intercooler etc upgrades all required.

A little extra on the suspension front:

It seems that most go for lower springs as the shocks on the vrs are already much better than the std setup. If your shocks still have life left in them I'd go for springs alone. If not then it may be worth forking out for a Bilstein b12 kit. Should last longer than a set of coilovers but offer most of the performance.

I forgot to mention:

upgraded anti roll bars front and rear - probably no.5

And front strut brace no.6

With everything else after.

H&R for springs and spacers get them on ebay.de as its much cheaper. get the Rieger splitter as its the best quality and the skirts are taller and cover the rough area around the sills.

Cheers for the info, I’m looking into the advice and slowly digesting the information.

The DTUK tuning box I’ve been told to avoid plug ins but looking at the responses this plug in seems highly recommended. I was thinking of a remap with Dyno tbh but the plug in now seems a good option.
