Winter tyres

Featured Replies

Can anyone advise the most suitable size winter tyres to fit a Fabia 2016. Normal tyres 215/45/85.

Thanks

Welcome.

If it has 215/45 R 16 now, why not stick with that in  All Season Tyres?

There is a Tyre Section in Briskoda.

As above if you want to change to all season tyres, if not, buy a used set of 15” Fabia steels/alloys and fit them with winter tyres 185/?? X 15, that is what I did for my wife’s August 2015 Polo 1.2TSI 110PS!  If I had been vainer I might have gone for 195/?? X 15 but I didn’t.

Thanks for the advice will consider all weather tyres as the tyres will need replacing later this year. Good to know 185/,,,,/15 Is the size for a winter tyre also.

185 - 60 R15 is the full size.

Thanks AG Falco

One thing to note about winter tires is if we get some warmer weather they'll wear fast and your car will have much less grip.

Had this a few years ago when we had a freakish 16c(ish) week in January.

Unless you live somewhere where you need them, please remember that they may be good when it's cold but not so when it's warmer. IE they give but also take.

110ps or tyre shreading power on UK warm or even hot roads.

Just as well there are tyres that are classed as Summer Tyres but are 3 peak marked and winter Certificated and not going to wear out of give poor handling in the hottest of UK days /nights.

There are others not just Michelin CrossClimate +,

some are fitting Bridgestone Weather Control A005 to Fabias.  & Reviewing in the Tyre Section.

Another thing to consider is summer, winter or all season tyres all slide the same on ice :P

Thanks for all your advice it is appreciated, I have been advised that they do not mean that you automatically stick to the road. Will remember that as always to drive according to the conditions.

@abaxas, might well all slide on ice, but not all slide the same, or get traction or no traction to move,  otherwise we would all be doomed..

So remembering that is important and drive accordingly or leave the car where it is, but then many have places to be and people to see and no public transport so fit the best tyres for their use or just be careful.

You can not control what others are doing that might slide into you though.

Exactly. I live in the middle of nowhere and every year see many a 4x4 lurking in a ditch as people assume they are invincible. People falsely assume traction=grip.

I'm not trying to get you not to use winter tyres, just it's important to understand they are not always what you need.

Certainly not what everyone needs or wants because many never ever fit Winter or All Weather Tyres.

But then location location location matters and to some even if 1 hour or just 100 yards a winter is all that the winter tyres are called upon to do the business they can be worth the cost.

For plenty of drivers these are maybe all they need for that time they need to get moving on ice, or off of ice.

Works for Break Down Operatives, Posties etc.

I've been using Michelin Alpin and Alpin Sport on our 2 cars for maybe 8 years, I have yet to notice any rapid wear in warmer weather as found in central Scotland, in fact I've been very surprised at just how little wear these tyres have "suffered".

As for people throwing on winter tyres then driving like idiots and ending up in ditches, that will always happens, idiots are idiots, this is always the statement I find people make when they see someone with winter tyres on their car(s), if you don't need winter tyres just leave it at that, justifying never fitting them is not useful.

Edit:- crazily maybe, I now tend to swop wheels/tyres at end Oct/beginning Nov and back again end Apr/beginning May - unless the spring weather is seriously hot and I am heading South.
