1.2 TSI Rattle

Featured Replies

Hiya folks,

New to forum. I'm Jordan and I've owned my 2016 Fabia Estate Monte-Carlo 1.2 TSI 110 for about 6 months now.

Firstly I think it's a great car. got it on 28,000 now coming up to 36,000 and it's superb.

However it's always had this annoying rattle which lasts for a second or two just as you move off and start to let the clutch out.

Does anyone have any thoughts? It doesn't make this noise at a stand still if you rev the engine.

The only similarity the noise makes to me is that of detonation or pinking. it slightly makes the noise under load also.

Looking forward to hearing from you all.

Jordan

Try some premium fuel, this engine requires it.

I’ve tried that and It has helped but the noise is still very much there.

Do you mean "proper" fuel, ie Esso/BP/Shell etc, or UL+ fuel, these cars don't need UL+ fuel, though they might get a bit sloppy if fed with Tesco UL as I discovered once when entering a roundabout in 2nd gear!

Edit:- a quick top up with Costco UL+ sorted that out, only time that I'd fed it Tesco UL - and the last unless needs must!

Sorry, I thought the OP said "I'm in Jordan" and running the fuel they have there...

Another idea I had which could be causing the noise is the Thrust release bearing in the clutch system. The noise seems to come about just as the release bearing breaks contact with the pressure plate/clutch cover. But then I don't have any bearing noise/rumbling coming from this area at idle.

I think I might need to jack the car up and have a proper look. However me being me, i know I'll end up taking it all apart!

IMO,  1.2 TSI. Euro 5 & then Euro 6 are lovely engines,  now discontinued.  So If you love it or care about having a keeper forget Long Life Servicing or Long Life Oil with fixed services.

Ignore VW Group, Skoda, Audi, SEAT & VW, they only care about the length of the Manufacturers warranty not car owners.

Change oil at 9,400 / 372 days or sooner, and the filter obviously, and no Long Life oil.

No VW504/507 & never Castrol crap.

Just any VW502 so 5w 40 Full Synthetic from any oil producer.   Long Life oils to not mean long lived TSI's IMO.

Worth trying a tank of 97 ron or 99 ron minimum when a TSI is at it's noisiest, maybe no more MPG, but just a happy chappy engine.

None of these Polo/Ibiza/Fabia of this platform with the 1.2TSI engines have what you might say is a "good" clutch assembly, they are back to the normal slave cylinder linkage and release bearing but that seems to not have been the best plan.

Rattles, I tried to remove/dampen out as many potential rattle sources on my wife's August 2015 Polo 1.2TSI 110PS, and that included applying sticky backed Velcro to the air inlet scoop where it mounts on the lock carrier assembly and buy a suitable "bridging clip" to keep the low pressure fuel pipe from rattling against the AC pipe beside/behind it - hopefully your car will have a "bridging clip" keeping that pipe away from there and connected/tied to the small coolant return pipe.

I'd need to go out for a drive in my wife's car to see if I'm accepting any rattles as being just the norm under these conditions before saying any more about this.

Her car does now have a DERV engine type gearbox mounting fitted to it now - to stop other clunks mainly in hot weather.

It's interesting you mention the engine mounts, as I've booked it in for replacement mounts under warranty as I've noticed a lot of engine movement lately. Closer inspection revealed the top gearbox mount was very weak.

So what makes the "DERV" mount different to the OE mount?

Thank you for the replies so far guys!

I think the 99ron fuel might be a good idea. I'll try that for a tank or two and report back. At least then we know if there is no difference it's most likely a mechanical noise as opposed to detonation.

What is a DERV engine mount? I only know of two gearbox mounts for the 1.2 TSI fabia/polo/ibiza and that's the standard 6Q0 199 555 xx mount, or the vibratechnics VAG200M mount.

Back to the beginning of Polo 9N in early 2002, and so probably same for Fabia and Ibiza 6L, all petrol engined cars were fitted with the "AR" version of the gearbox mounting and all the TDI engined cars were fitted with the "AS" version of the gearbox mounting.  My wife's August 2015 build Polo 1.2TSI 110PS was fitted with the "AR" version of the gearbox mounting and when I complained about clunking when still in warranty, my VW dealer initially removed > greased > refitted that "AR" version of gearbox mounting, when I handed it back in a few days later they replaced that gearbox mounting with the "AS" version which, as it was normally only used with TDI cars is a lot stiffer.

There are at least 3 official VW Group gearbox mountings for these cars, 6Q0 199 555 AR,  6Q0 199 555 AS and 6C0 199 555 B, now I know that "AR" is softer than "AS" but where the 6C0 "B" version fits into the line up I can't say.

I thought that from the other thread that you knew all about the different versions and had just swopped an "AR" version for an "AS" version - no?

Indeed, i had the AR mount (which was greased under warranty) and have now swapped it myself for the AS mount.

Ive just received a dogbone mount which is designed for a diesel engine (not sure which, i think its the MK2 1.6 TDI), but all the dogbone mounts are the same dimensions (some have slightly differing brackets that bolt to the engine but thats easily swapped).

For my car im swapping them to all diesel mountings until i can save up enough spare cash for a full suspension overhall (new bushings for ARB and wishbone, new shocks and lowering springs), and perhaps then a remap and may try out the vibratechnics mounts, depending on how much mr churchil wants to charge me for the 45 extra horses id be carrying about.

I just didnt know what you meant by a ‘DERV’ mount (and still dont if im honest lol).

DERV just means Diesel Engine Road Vehicle - which probably mainly translates into TDI engined cars.

Oh, lol, that would make petrol cars ‘PERV’s haha

Jordan, the noise you describe is most likely the clutch damper springs. These are positioned in the clutch hub and absorb transmission shocks. If the springs have become worn (and this can happen at any time if a previous driver has been moving off with lots of power or just doesn't have very good clutch control) or compressed as they take up the drive they can often make a noise that sounds just like detonation or pinking as you move off. It's not uncommon and appears just as you take your foot off the clutch and are feeding in more power. Try moving off more slowly and as smoothly as you can, not dumping the clutch and see if the noise is still there. It won't be for sure. If your engine was pinking due to the need for higher octane fuel, you would notice the pinking as you accelerated hard in other gears, particularly the higher gears under load. So I think you can probably rule out a fuel issue here.

Hi, thanks for this. You’ve nailed it. If I move off slowly and really gently let the clutch out the noise doesn’t happen. If I try to move off more normally that’s when the boise appears, like you said, just as my foot leaves the pedal.

The car was on 28k when i bought it and now it’s approaching 36k the noise is definetly getting louder.

When I take the car in for it’s engine mounts I’ll also tell them that this needs to be done also.

Thanks for this. Hopefully I can get the car to replicate the noise on the day with the technician.

Make sure the engine is nice and hot when you take it in. Some rattle is normal as the car ages but it shouldn't be excessive. I'm not sure they will be very keen to do it under warranty though as clutch discs are not covered beyond 6 months normally from new. It's a wear and tear item. But worth a try.

Thanks Estate Man. I’ll see what they say. If push comes to shove though, I’m more than happy to take the job on myself. I’m just happy to know it’s not the gearbox. It does also answer the clutch judder I get if I gove the engine too much revs (when cold) and let the clutch out slowly. I’d say with the weak engine mounts too, the judder can be pretty violent. Thanks again.

I also have noisy gearbox mount. I was going to just replace the gearbox mount with same one but I would like to fit the diesel stronger one - can you advise me where you bought it from and is it the exact same 'plug in and play' part? Thanks :)

Thank you, do you notice any vibration with this stronger mount? I've heard if one mount is uprated the others should also be as it will shake the new stronger mount to bits over time.
