1.5 TSI and DSG question ...

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Just orders a new Skoda Superb (first new car for ages so very excited) ... SEL Exec, 1.5 TSI DSG.  Plus a very gadgets on top (we all love gadgets right?)...

Anyway, since ordering have done some more reading up and seen comments on 1.5 maybe having some problems and also DSG ... in particular the 7 speed ‘dry’ DSG if I’ve understood correctly.

My questions are ...

1) Is the latest DSG a ‘dry’ version or is this a historic thing?

2) Is the 1.5 a big problem (if at all) - appreciate that people tend to post about when things don’t more than when they do, so wanted a balanced view?

obviously already ordered, so probably too late to change my mind, but maybe help me consider getting an extended warranty...

thanks all in advance - and nice friendly forum btw :)

I’m pretty sure you will have the less reliable dry clutch version. Information from ‘Honest John’

DQ200 is a seven speed transverse DSG with a dry clutch pack used in all five brands. The gearbox code in the diagnostic log shows 0AM and or 0CW. This gearbox does not have a service requirement as it is sealed for life. It's fittted to 1.0 litre to 1.8 litre petrol and diesel engines and has a torque capacity of 250Nm. Very high failure rate.

DQ400 is a six speed transverse DSG with a wet clutch pack and is used in the Volkswagen Golf Hybrid and Passat GTE and also Audi A3 e-tron. The gearbox code in the diagnostic log shows 0DD. It also has a service requirement of 40,000 miles. Generally reliable.

DQ250 is a six speed transverse DSG with a wet clutch pack. The gearbox code in the diagnostic log shows 02E and or 0D9. This also has a service requirement of 40,000 miles and a torque capacity 350Nm. Fitted to 2.0 litre petrol and diesel engines. Generally reliable.

DQ381 is a seven speed transverse DSG with a wet clutch pack and torque capacity of 420-430Nm. Fitted to 2.0 TSI petrol engines. Generally reliable.

This isn’t quite up to date as the 2 litre diesel which I just bought has a 7 speed DSG but with a wet clutch AFAIK. It was the potential problems with the dry clutch put me off the smaller petrol engine. Hope yours is OK - clearly they make a lot of them and most must work OK.

Ah, that’s super helpful thanks Mph25.

So definitely sounds like an extended warranty is the way to go (give we already ordered and we need a petrol given will mostly be used for short trips. Plus we prefer an auto and have read the TSI and manual has other ‘kangarooing’ problems).

Much appreciated :)

When I spoke to the dealer they said that you can order the official one from Skoda before they start the build - so I guess you’re past that as it sounds like it’s being shipped now.

However the dealer also said they did their own used warranty that you can buy that has the same level of cover (in this case 1yr extension more expensive than the Skoda one, but 2yr cheaper).  So maybe have a word with the dealer and ask?

cheers - and enjoy the new car!

With regards to warranty, you can extend it provided the car is not yet registered. I did. Factory 4 year warranty added post build and pre pick up

Likewise i did the same on my octy last year , must be before registered though .

You can still order the factory extended warranty, just make sure it is done before car arrives at dealer and gets registered

Much more comprehensive than any add on or independent warranty (and will fully cover DSG).  I think it is transferable to new owner if you sell the car, upto it’s expiry date

Also have a DQ200 DSG on the way. And I got the extended warranty, 5 years in total.

I've been scouring the internet about the reliability of the DQ200, and I'm fairly certain the early units had a problem with the mechatronic unit. Initially they used synthetic ATF oil that had an additive containing sulphur that would end up interfering with the ECU of the gearbox. Newer units should run a mineral based ATF that would not cause that issue. Apart from that i'm not reading alot about recurring issues.

I also plan to take my car to a gearbox specialist to change fluids. DQ200 2009-2017 have NO service schedule, they are sealed 'lifetime' units. So I plan on getting a yearly or twoyearly gearbox oil change at that specialist, depending on mileage.

There are also chiptuners that offer "DSG driveability and longevity"-tune of the DSG box. I'm still on the fence about doing that, especially since I'll be having the extended warranty.

Great post Too Tall, thank you.

Yes think I’ll definitely got for the 5 yr for peace of mind if nothing else.  Talking with the dealer they acknowledged this is something people ask but said they just don’t see issues in their service centre - so maybe an early issue - or maybe just sales speak.

personally, I suspect I’ll sell and move to hybrid or even electric within 5 years, so would probably leave it at that.

Cheers

Haha, thanks jb67 ... yes that’s the tricky thing with the internet - in that people mostly post about problems and you tend not to read about all the cases things are fine!  Obviously a pain for everyone that has problems and wise to be cautious - but hard to get a balanced view including all the time’s it works out fine...

will still get the warranty for peace of mind - but fingers crossed I won’t need to use it!

cheers

The latest versions have so many electronic Gizmos , i was more concerned about them causing problems 4.5 years down the road , and at the cost 2 years extra is worth it on a New Car , also added advantage if you sell after 4 years , still in warranty sir , responce

Hi all,

Just wanted to say a big thanks to all for the advice here - much appreciated.

unferstood re the 1.5 problem being more manual related, so just the separate possible DSG reliability to be slightly wary about.

Based on the advice here have taken the extra warranty for 5yrs in total - confirmed today by dealer (in Chichester - nice people).

Now with the extra peace of mind, back to waiting and getting excited for when it arrives in 8-10 weeks now ... assuming Brexit doesn’t impact import, lol
