vRS TDI or TSI???

Featured Replies

I am planning on changing my Audi A6 2.7TDI Avant shortly for an Octavia vRS.

I've driven a TDI estate belonging to a friend (thanks Jon ), but most of my journeys are pretty short, (school run and weekly shop), probably about 10-15 miles and I always have a nagging doubt in the back of my mind about the DPF blocking up. I had a CC 2.0 TDI before the A6 and it seemed to do a regen quite often, although I have never actually noticed this on doing it.

So the question is, what mpg can be achieved in the real world driving a vRS TSI?

Is 35mpg achievable this type of usage?

I would be looking for a car with sat nav, heated leather and cruise control. I think that the 230 version is just about in my price range, is any of that kit standard on those, or are they the same spec as the 220?

Also, is the 230 worth looking for or should I just look for a TSI?

Petrol is the best bet if you're doing mostly short trips, diesel only really comes into its own if you're doing longer trips on a fairly frequent basis and subsequently higher annual mileages (>10k miles pa).

Diesels don't really like short trips and if you do too many they can go into limp home mode.

I am on my 2nd mk3 TSI, previously a 2016 220 and now a MY19 245. Given your type of driving I wouldnt say 35mpg was impossible. Im basing that on my long term average over 17k miles on my 220 as being 31. My trips are mainly work and back (less than 10 miles each way, but often bumper to bumper so anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour), trips to the local supermarket of less than 6 miles and the odd long airport run etc. On the big runs the 220 would do anything between 38 and 45 on the dash. These are all taken from the onboard but I didnt find it was worth tracking it after a few brim to brim calculations as it was near enough.

Thanks for both of your replies.

Somehow I manage over 12k miles per year, not sure how I do that though!

The school run is generally a straight run there and back with no stationary traffic.

Neither of the two diesels that I've had have gone into limp mode with this type of usage, can be a bit chilly though as the A6 just manages to get up to temperature as I'm coming into the drive in this weather.

The A6 averages about 35mpg and we also have a Mk1 Audi TT and this averages about 29mpg on the mostly the same types of journeys. These are calculated from brim to brim fills over 12 months.

I'd expect low 30s based on what you have described. My long term calculated average over 15k/1yr is 37.8mpg in my 220 TSI DSG, however most of my journeys are motorway with very little traffic and 40mpg+ is acheiveable. When I do shorter trips at weekend i.e. food shop, at 8 miles each way, I just about break 30mpg.

With your mileage and the anti-diesel trend, petrol seems the better option in my opinion.

220 TSI DSG here. Made change from TDi, I read hundreds of TDi vs TSi so here's my 10pence.

I have an 18 mile B road commute and get between 32-42mpg (depends how late I am). Other journey are either short shopping trips or long 2hr family visits. 44mpg being best on one trip.

Had between 320-420 miles from a tank.

Long term average after 6k is 36.7mpg.

Mapped 220TSI here and my average is 29mpg.  Mostly due to my four mile nose to tail commute (manage to achieve a 6mph average last week :speechless:), or when I escape that, I'm enjoying stretching its legs and blowing the cobwebs away.  On my last 400 mile round trip to Dorset, I averaged 40.1mpg, which was quite easy to achieve if driven gently.

Gaz

I have a tdi vrs and only go 10 miles to work, no issues with dpf so far. I try and go for a decent drive every now and again using vpower to give it a clean out.

  • 3 months later...

Just recently said goodbye to a 2017 2.0 TDI DSG Octavia VRS after a trouble free two year lease, my journeys were anything from the corner shop to a few hours on the motorway or generally stuck in traffic during my commute. No issues with DPF on constant short runs and averaged a fairly poor 38mpg over the two years (i like putting my foot down but the car mainly had an easy life)

95% of the time i used V Power which i think helps.

Can't fault the car... fits my life like a glove so bought a 2018 Octavia VRS 230 TSI DSG and straight off the bat it's in a different League of speed, it's so much quicker to warm up from a cold start, feels more lively and responsive and smoother with gear changes and im still getting average 31mpg which i expect to get better after the honey mood period :)

One thing to note both cars have the 6spd DSG and i don't know why but the petrol DSG reacts more smoothly over speed bumps for example if i slow down for the bump it will go to 2nd gear and stay in that gear where the diesel DSG will try to do it in third then bottle it mid bump and change to second which then makes it jerk very annoying!, It would do the same rolling up to junctions where the petrol is much keener to put it into 1st gear which is loads better!

Also not sure if it's because of the recent diesel scare but my new higher horse powered VRS is cheaper to insure!

Apologies for the long post it's my first :)

I have a 2014 vRS TDI with the CRDt3+ box and have no issues with DPF or the tuning box itself. I have some uprated darkside dev kit added with twin exhaust and some other bits. Its a lot of fun to drive and i dont have the lightest right foot. I was doing 120 mile communte and its now down to 40 per day and i'm averaging 44 to the gallon and my driving style would be described as spirited.

I don't think 12k a year warrants a diesel. Treat yourself to the TSI - you deserve it after 2 diesels.

35mpg is easily achievable.
