Upgrading 2011 Skoda Yeti Stereo System

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I own a Skoda Yeti 2011 with the following basic stereo system. See pics attached below.

Currently when playing music on Apple Music with my Android Samsung thru Bluetooth the music metadata is non existent as per pic attached. Just says "BT-Audio". That's probably normal I get that.

However, I wish to upgrade the system to something more modern with a touch screen that has the inbuilt navigation, app features, video and all that jazz but I have a few questions. Perhaps someone here has upgraded somthing similar beforehand.

Q1) If I upgrade to a newer system will the music metadata now display via bluetooth to the screen display? Ie. Artist, album & song.

Q2) Anyone had success with Q1 on an updated system playing Apple Music through an Android Phone via Bluetooth. Perhaps there is some kind of compatability issue playing Apple Music thru an Android device I'm not aware of.

Note I'm not interested in getting a USB stick to play my mysic through a system as all my music is on an Apple subscription and I won't be able to transfer it anyway. I am only interested in playing music via Bluetooth.

Q3) If someone has had some success with the above updating their system from the old one perhaps is there any specifically suitable systems one recommend I upgrade to? Some of the research on stereo systems I've done doesn't answer my questions above. Willing to spend quite a bit.

PS : Bought my first Yeti a month ago. Love it!!

I suspect you really need to go for an after market one. Much cheaper than trying to fit a later system from the last yetis made. Even there I had to pay £150 extra to enable extra features such as music streaming, maps etc on the display. You are likely to have all sorts of problems getting the later system to work with your maxidot and steering wheel.

You can get whatever you wish to pay for, but will almost certainly loose features such as the maxidot display of what is happening, phone controls etc on the steering wheel.

If it is working and all that is missing is a text display of metadata, I would live with it on an 8 year old car, as that is a lot better than some have, eg no bluetooth at all on the lower spec models of the time.

I'd need to double check because I don't use BT audio that much (I usually use the SD Card or Smartlink) but my recollection is that I was slightly disappointed to find that the Bolero in my new 2017 Yeti didn't show any media metadata using bluetooth.  Or maybe it was the playback control that was missing?  Either way, it doesn't seem have the full set of bluetooth media protocols.

At least the connection "bong" has gone, though.  That was somewhat intrusive on my 2010 one.

It does if you pay for smartlink?

There's a thread on the forums where an Octavia owner has done about three upgrades to the stereo.  If you skip the other car mods in the thread you'll see all that is involved in upgrading to a later Skoda stereo on a DIY basis. Sasha's vRS

Yep 'android auto' the way to go so I've researched after shopping around a few stores. Also need to get installed a USB port and steering wheel support. Might need a facia change too after I select the box and I'll lose bluetooth functionally on metadot data but happy to roll with that for what I want.

Yep, smartlink+android auto gives selection by track/album/artist, and play/pause, previous track/next track control on the Bolero and from the steering wheel buttons.  However, it does require the phone to be plugged in to the USB port, which is by some way not as convenient as bluetooth connecting automatically when you turn on the ignition - you don't even have to take the phone out of your pocket.  Bluetooth, though, does not give any media metadata or playback controls on the Bolero.

So it looks like smartlink is the way to go if you are set on being able to use the Bolero as more than a glorified bluetooth speaker.

With my smart link I have never worked out how to stop the music streaming from amazon?

Once playing all I seem to be able to do is pause playback.

You may already have tried this, but if not...

If you tap on the headphones icon on the Smartlink screen you should get this little down arrow appearing:

Tap again and you will get a list of the audio apps that Android Auto (or the iPhone equivalent) is offering to Smartlink:

Tap on the audio app you want instead of Amazon Music and it will use that one as the default in future (the wee green dot indicates which one you've chosen).  Tap on the headphones icon again to make the list go away.

hHats not my issue. Once I play my music via selecting amazon  (which I wanted to use) the only way to turn amazon off seems to be to turn the radio off? To stop the music playing all I seem to be able to do is pause playback?

That sounds like it might be a limitation in Amazon Music rather than Smartlink (I don't use Amazon Music, by the way, I just installed it on my phone to check that it was Smartlink compatible).

FWIW the Sony Music app that I use (the top one in that second photo I posted) behaves the same way: play or pause are the only options.  But when it's paused, it's paused: it doesn't start playing again all by itself.  For example, I can go to Media and select playback from SD Card without any interference from the Music app.  I can do that even when I'm using Google Maps for navigation in Smartlink.  Come to that, playback from SD Card only has play and pause options, too.  Is the behaviour of Amazon Music actually any different from those?  (Are you maybe worried about it continuing to use mobile data when it's paused?)

Yes its the possible use of mobile data.

I don't actually use this facility now as my phone is supplied by work and we are allowed reasonable private use; however they have since instructed that we can't use them for streaming data such as a music service.

I suspect that Amazon Music doesn't use data when it's paused.  It should be easy enough to check if necessary.  On Android you can see the amount of data that an app uses via the Apps function, or the Data Usage function, on the settings menu.
