Haggling

Featured Replies

Hello Folks.

more than likely i will be buying a new Kodiaq (1.5 , petrol, manual, 7 seater) from a dealer this weekend.  Will be part ex'ing mine and dont expect more than £500 for it. Will be paying cash for the new one.

is there any dealer "tricks" i should be aware and any hints / advice for haggling  or asking for extras etc. thanks in advance

Welcome.

Punt the car to WBAC, Evans Halshaw, Arnold Clark, local paper / gumtree etc.

Others here will advise on take the car on Finance, get a great deal and settle the finance within 14 days or so with your cash money.

Check out the potential issues with VW Group 1.5TSI manuals before ordering one.

The Salespeople might never ever of heard of issues.

If the dealer goes off to ask a manager, say that's ok, gives me time to check my email for more carwow offers

Doesn't matter if you don't have any, but his face will drop, he doesn't know if you asked carwow for offers,  but it might wake him up to offering bigger discount

The old trick of getting up, putting coat on,  and taking first couple of steps as if leaving, whilst saying if you had just come down a bit more, could have wrapped it up and bought it,  might get you better offer in response.  Might seem rude, but remember salesmen are trained to haggle, but you are unlikely to be experienced at haggling.   (Ultimately they can sell you a car at £1 over their cost if they get volume bonuses, and still make a profit, but would much rather make £1000+ direct profit)

As already mentioned, feel free to take PCP if it comes with better price, you can pay it off next day, and retain the discount (and any freebies that came with it).

Only rule is must pay off in full before 14 days (officially a cooling off period) after which you need to pay a settlement which could include extra interest

Thanks for all that info. it had never crossed my mind to take pcp and then cancel  but great idea and something to  think about.

thanks for the tips

Make sure you do get some quotes on Carwow, then you will know what sort of discount is realistic. Print off the lowest quote from another dealer and take it with you.

Make it clear to the dealer that you are serious about placing an order, but only if they match your best quote. Don't be afraid to leave. They can always call you (assuming you have left your details). If you can't do the deal there and then, you can follow up your visit with an email making it clear that you are still interested if they  can match your quote. Don't follow up your visit with a phone call as you will appear desperate.

Don't expect huge discounts for cash - finance deals are where the money is made. For the same reason, don't be too upfront about your intention to pay off the finance straight away, as the finance companies tend to pay commission to dealers in installments.

If the sales exec tries to baffle you with their version of man-maths, don't be afraid to pull out a calculator and a pencil to work out the total cost. In your situation, all that matters is the total price.

Always be courteous and respectful. When I bought my new car, the dealer was aware of what I was paying for the Yeti. She asked me why I couldn't afford another £60 a month for a Karoq. I told her that I'm the sole breadwinner as my wife cares for our autistic son. Money is tight and it's not going to be spent paying more that I need to on a car. Being upfront about our situation saved a lot of bulls***! :)

Let them know that you are serious but don't walk in and say 'I want a Kodiaq', lest they take your custom for granted. It won't hurt them to think you are seriously considering an alternative such as a Hyundai/Nissan/whatever.

Consider buying a car from stock, particularly if you want a more attractive discount and aren't too precious about getting the exact extras you want.

Hope that helps!
