Very loud noise from rear after haldex oil change

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone, I have been using the forum for information since buying my octavia early last year and although have had a query or two, have not yet go round to voicing them.

I bought my 2007 1.9tdi 4x4 estate last year with 178k and full skoda service log. Shortly after buying it I noticed a noise that appears in 5th and 6th gear only (between 30-50mph ish) coming from the rear of the car. After checking this forum for advice I put it down to the dreaded haldex something or other (my mind is a bit blank at the mo and was a long time ago doing this research). So I thought, come service time I shall get the haldex oil & filter changed. (In the skoda service log I have there is only 1 mention of haldex oil change over 100k miles ago).

I went into Skoda/Arnold Clark to ask if there haldex oil change price includes the filter. Receptionist didn't know so she went to check & I could overhear the conversation which went something like this....

'Does it include filter?'

'I don't know, I'd imagine it would but I don't know'    Receptionist came back & told me 'I'm sure it includes filter change'

So given they can't even tell me this as a certainty as well as reading about the stories of these garages with regards to servicing AND overhearing 2 drunk Polish mechanics on a plane journey back from Poland who both work within the Skoda/Audi/Golf garages talk about how they are pressured into cheating customers (wiping round filer caps etc to make work look like it's been done etc, etc) I was assured NOT to use this Skoda Garage. Oh, and the fact they never replied to 2 seperate online enquires about servicing as I was keen on continuing the Skoda service as car was maintained by Skoda from new by previous owner.

So I used another garage. I had Mot, oil & filter and haldex oil and filter just done from them on Monday. All went well except the Haldex filter change. Mechanic explained that the filter nut to remove the filter was caked and looked like it hadn't been removed for a long time (possibly collaborating this car only having 1 haldex oil & filter change in 178k) so when they went to remove it for acces to filter, a piece of the aluminium casing at the thread had broken away. This meant that the cap couldn't be put back in to hold any oil. They had the car for 2 more days and tried a few things settling on (if I remember this correctly) a liquid metal that sets (I might not have that completely accurate). This allowed them to thread the cap back on as well as put the rubber washer on and also a bit of sealant around the outside for extra measure. Took a long time due to drying times, filling with oil, test drives, draining, drying, reapplying etc etc.

I picked up the car earlier today and thanked them for their help in resolving this. Sounded like it was a right pain for them but they appeared to have done a great job.

My worry though (for which I shall give them a call in the morning for) is that when driving to park the car up (about a 7 mile trip) the grumble noise in 5th & 6th is still there (damn) BUT now when travelling either 60 or 70mph (think it was 70) there is an extremely LOUD noise coming from the back of the car which was not there before. I'm thinking I can't put the kid in the back due to this noise + potential whatever hazard.

Can people please offer some advice as to potential cause of this loud noise?

Also advice regarding that grumbling noise in 5th and 6th gear. Since I have had the car it has gotten a bit worse. Such a shame as it's a fantastic car but I'm not flush with cash & can't be in a position where I have to fork out fortunes. I've been stung with far too many cars like that unfortunately.

Sorry for the long post but just wanted to give a bit of background on car plus what happened at garage.

Thank you in advance :)

Sounds like you are in for some expensive repairs. Is the grumbling in 5th/6th the gearbox? or is it just that it happens at speed and you just so happen to be in 5th or 6th? Does it go away when you put the car into neutral?

I would find a very good VAG specialist that know what they are doing and start saving up. Sounds like your Haldex is very poory

The grumbling noise happens within a certain speed range in 5th and 6th only. When I put my foot on the clutch at speed the noise dissapears. Whilst this is annoying and a bit worrying, it is the new sound at 60-70 that is scary to me. Extremely loud.

They did put new oil in, right...?

I would assume so given that they had to drain the haldex a couple of times until they could get the seal right.

did they change the Haldex AND rear diff oil?  could be right oil wrong place

It was only in for a Haldex oil & filter change however given what has went on I will be asking if they could have accidentally drained the diff. The thought has crossed my mind.

I phoned them today to let them know of the noise but I didn't have enough time after work to take it to them. Because of where I live, public transportation network is a right royal pain in the...  The car was taken straight from the garage to work after picking it up yesterday and has sat there as I have the works van at the mo.

I am not overly optimistic they will found out what it is. They seem a great garage but not sure how specific they would be with the haldex.

A little update finally.

The noise has softened a bit but is still there.

I went into a VW specialist today to discuss this noise and the guy behind the counter says it sounds like a prop shaft bearing. Reckons it would be around £240 + vat. The car is booked in later this month for them to check it out anyway so fingers crossed it's an easy and cheap fix.

Thanks all for your comments :)

Well, another update for anyone who may have been experiencing a similiar noise. Turns out it wasn't my propshaft bearing. The guy at the garage said it's the  clutch and flywheel on it's way out causing the vibration to travel to the rear axle area. He quoted me around £1600 to do clutch and flywheel. He also quoted me about £1300 to do the turbo as he said I have turbo whistle, which I new but didn't know, I honestly thought it was just specific to this type of car. It's not too bad a whistle but not I know what it is, well....

Anyway, £1600 is extreme, I'm far from that flush. I phoned up the garage I usually go to and they can do the clutch and flywheel for either £1100 or £1200 depending on what type it is.

The turbo they can do for about the same price. A lot of cash 😢

I got in touch with Turbo Technics and they can do me a recon turbo for £300 plus vat. I just have to find a good garage around this neck of the woods who would be willing to fit a customer supplied part. However the priority is doing the clutch and flywheel as that seems more urgent. I can now hear that loud noise in fourth gear as well.

Interesting that its though to be a clutch and flywheel, i would have thought that you would get other symptons on top, not just a noise in 5th and 6th.  Have you noticed anything else?

Yes I was highly surprised too but thinking about it since this mechanic told me there are a couple of things that could also point to his diagnosis. Sometimes when I put my foot on the clutch when driving there is a slight 'squeak' type of noise. The sound doesn't come from the pedal itself but somewhere else. That has been happening for quite some time but is not very often so I keep forgetting about it when not using car.

There was/is a faint rattle noise when stationary (engine on) that dissapears when I put my foot on the clutch. I just put that down to typical engine/gear noise.

What else has happened though was the week running up to the appointment I noticed it became slightly harder to put into gear a few times. I simply put this down to my mind going into overtime with worry knowing that the car was going into the garage but maybe it's starting to show the signs more. That rattly noise that was in 5th and 6th now appears in 4th when I'm slowing down and using gears to slow too.

I kept thinking maybe my mind is playing tricks but maybe it's not. The mechanic did say he could feel the vibrations through the clutch pedal and they seemed pretty assured this is the problem.

Either way it needs sorted but no idea when I can do it yet. It's a bit of a bugger to say the least. I've only had the car a year and to fork out potentially upto £2500 for turbo + clutch/flywheel is daunting. I'm still paying off the loan I took for the car. It does have 190k miles on it but had full skoda service history and has been looked after by previous owner. Drives very well and I love to drive it but still, that's a lot of dosh! 😟

Hi, coming back to this as it is still an ongoing problem. I have been discussing in this thread.

Could you give me a rough idea how much it would cost to replace the haldex?

Thank you
