Took delivery of my VRS!!!!

Featured Replies

After a very long ten day wait, I've taken delivery of my VRS.

I was told by the dealer that there is no need to run it in and that I should just "boot it" so it's pro0ven that it can go up to 130mph in the blink of an eye.

It came with only 3 miles on the clock which was pretty nice.

I've been a little shicked by the brakes though, I would've hoped for a little more stopping power given the ease with which the car picks up speed.

One major prob is that, due to the awful weather in / around southampton today, it's had some muddy splashes already.

I'll try and get some photos tomorrow!!!

One last thing ...

when waiting for my vrs to have its valet completed I had a little fiddle with the new Octavia VRS and I was taken aback by the build quality of the thing. I haven't had the chance to see one up close but I'm really fond of it now. The plan is to keep the fabia for three years and then get hold of an octavia as well ;-)

Don't forget the brakes and discs are new, and will need bedding in!

Mine are standard and are fine, although I never drive fast anyway ;)

I'd have a read of the owners manual with regards to the running in procedure.

Yeh i thought the brakes may wear in a little.

I haven't looked at the manual re running in as the dealer seemed adamant that "these engines have been bench tested for approx 3000 miles so there's no need to run them in". If that's there line then so be it. I mentioned that some people say otherwise but he said official skoda policy was no specific run in procedures.

It's a fantastic little car though. Seems to command a lot of respect on the road as well. I had a little fun with a porsches boxter who was impressed enough to the let me move out into his lane in front of him.

Can't really fault it at the moment.

Then I sugest he sits down and actually reads up on what he is selling.

Should be fine. From what I've seen today anyway, you hardly need to rev the car so it can't be an issue of over revvng. Also, you don't need to use full throttle so there won't be an issue of giving it too much gas.

I do have a scratch on the top of my ash tray though but I've got a replacement lid on order!

 Imagine the cost of that!! Every VAG engine doing 3000 miles before it left the factory - I think he's having you on mate.

How long would it take to run every engine for 3000 miles before they put them into cars???

Also doing 130mph on brand new tyres and brakes is suicidal!!

Yeh I know the claims were a little ambitious, although from what I've heard there's still great debate as to what extent the cars do or don't need to be run in.

I'm not going to be "booting it" as he said - although it was very hard not to let it creep up yesterday and just let it see what it could do. However, as people have said (and I noted myself) the tyres and brakes are leaving a little to be desired at the moment.

Therefore, I'm going to be driving it pretty much in line with the run in procedure that the manual still seems to mention without even trying. Much of my driving will be in towns for the time being so there's little point in using full throttle to hop between sets of lights:D

I do think it's strange that dealers can't agree on these things though!

He's not "having me on" as I'm simply repeating what he said, I take everything they say with a pinch of salt tbh. However, I would presume that dealers do get these snippets from somewhere and simply repeat what they hear as opposed to just having a competition to see who can make up the most spurious claims!

Brakes were frankly awful for the first 1000 miles or so, coz I took it easy. Run them in a bit and they'll start behaving themselves

With regards running in, instructions are in the handbook and the dealer is blatently WRONG.

That said, as long as you warm it up without trashing the engine and idle for a bit before turning off after a hard run, shouldn't have too much trouble.

I pretty much just drove it around for a tank or two :o and did some backroad driving to use brakes, gears and engine at varying speeds etc. Great fun and that way you run in the car nicely too

yeh, I've been taking it out on some nice twisty country roads so that it has to go through the gears etc.

TBH, there's not much excuse for thrashing it as it doesn't need it anyway. Even using half throttle and chaging up at about 2500/3000rpm I'm still finding that it's pulling quite nicely.

The gearing is taking a bit of getting used too though, I can't seem to make up my mind when i should be in 1st/2nd or 2nd/3rd etc!!!
