Octavia 3FL Fuel Tank noise

Featured Replies

Hi Everyone,

Is it normal to hear the fuel hitting the walls of the tank splashing? Usually happens in stop and go traffic  breaking/accelerating and in silence.

I did not hear it before, but now when the tank is 1/2 .. or full.. I hear it more and more.

Don't know if it's normal or should I go to the dealer to check it.

Thanks.

It's been commented on by several owners over the last couple of years, so seems like it's normal.

I can't say that I have ever heard it on mine

There were many posts on it about a year ago IIRC, mostly saying it was worse when the tank was between full and 3/4 full.

I did not heard it before. Just stared to happen in the last months or so, and seems to be getting worse....

Before it was like a vacuum when opening the tank lid to refill when empty. Not happening anymore.

I hear it everytime the tank is around 2/3 to full. I assumed to be normal because it's liquid in a container after-all, but I had never heard this in any other car I've owned.

Any reason to worry about this?

Not hurting to ask dealer anyway, I wonder what they say.

Check the doors (not a joke) I thought I was going mad a month or two back as I suddenly started to hear what I thought was the fuel slapping about in the tank. Had a search about on the net and here and water trapped in the door was mentioned a few times. I went round each door and sure enough the rear passenger door had blocked drain holes at the bottom and had a load of water trapped in it. Ran my hand along the bottom of the door and cleared the holes and the water all came out and hasn't been a problem since. Seemed a bit strange as well as it felt like the door rubber was partially covering the holes too which doesn't help the situation.

I can check the drain holes in the door  it where can I find them?:)

I have the same noise. Draining holes are between rubber seal and the door edge, 3 at each door. But the noise is a fuel tank design problem.  Baftă.

Along the bottom but just open each door and give it a shake, that will soon tell you if it's trapped water.

You can just wiggle opened door, you should hear the water inside if exist.

I have the noise from fuel tank. Mine is more a clonking sound. Happens when tank is over 3/4. For me it's the fuel pump assembly in the tank moving.

Have tried to get dealer to look at it multiple times and only hearing excuses. I.e. too much fuel in tank for them to drain, bring it back next time empty. Do that and the next time I get a can't identify problem as the tank is empty.

Given up worrying and just turn the stereo up when the tank is full

Hello everyone,

I have recently bought new Octavia 3 FL, 1.6 TDI. I have noticed the fuel tank splashing sound after few stops and when starting to accelerate.

Has anyone found a solution to this problem? I have contacted the dealer who said there were complaints before but apparently is a design problem and that they cannot do anything about it.

Does it happen regularly for you? I mean when the tank is full or it happens also when is on low fuel?
