Door panel poly sheet - What's it called?

Featured Replies

Hi

2002 vRS hatch.

I need to strip all my doors in order to fix various problems but my experience is that the thin polythene sheet that is glued to the sheet metal under the trim panel will break/tear and be a pain to repair/refit.  Does anyone know what these are called or where I can buy some decent replacements.

Thanks

Darren

It is called a door membane or door foil depending on what part system its viewed on.

However, most of us just go somewhere like B&Q, and buy a large sheet of heavy duty polythene, lay the old membrane on as a template and cut it accordingly.

If you want the OEM item, I can get you part numbers, but they are not cheap.

Hope it helps.

You need parts number 50 on here (common to all mk1 Octavias) but I've tried a handful of the bigger European suppliers and all are showing them as no longer available. Note that the rear doors are not the same for saloon vs estate.

If you try somewhere selling building supplies ask for Visqueen, which is a heavy duty builders plastic.

Also, if you were feeling generous to the community here you could make templates of the ones you take off so new ones could be cut out without having to guess :)

Hi guys

Thanks for the replies.  Making my own looks like the way to go then.  I will certainly post up the dimensions when I get to do the job.

(I thought I saw some heavy duty replacements on eBay for not much money some while ago; but I can't find them now.)

Whatever material you choose to use, just use a good quality sealer between the membrane and the door, as you cannot believe how much water gets past the outer glass seals and inside the door when the car is parked in heavy rain.

I got caught in a rainstorm while I had the inner liner off the door, so I chose to wait it out sitting in the car. I got quite a good front row seat on what happens, but also a bit of a shock, and my window seal on that door was only 6 months old, so was in good nick.

The only place I have seen the OE membranes was on a Czech website that I found on google, but that was over 18 months ago, so could well be NLA now.

I think i used pvc pipe jointing compound on heavy gauge dpc
