Superb mk3 life so far....

Featured Replies

Hi guys new to the forum so i hope am doing this right. Just wanted to share my experiences so far with my 2016 superb and share some feedback. Having started with a rapid and then a mk3 octavia vrs i thought I'd step up and go for the flagship of the range. Its a 2016 150 SE L with currently 38,000 miles on the clock(28,000 when i got it) 1 previous woman owner which was purchased August last year from my local skoda dealership.  After covering about 10,000 miles and 6 months of ownership all's i feel from this experience is massive dissapointment and being underwhelmed for a flagship car. The dealership didnt help by handing over the car with out of shape tyres which meant spending money straight away on new rears. Maybe thats put a bad taste in my mouth but overall i feel the build quality is questionable. The squeaks and rattles from the armrest, dash and glovebox shouts low quality plastics. A month after taking the car the memory fuction on the driver's seat stopped working. The interior panel on the rear d/s door came loose to the point you could fit your hand through. Both where fixed under warranty but its still something i wouldnt expect. The car has gone in today because the chrome trim has come loose aswell as the glovebox randomly opening while driving. But my biggest gripe of them all is the ride quality. After reading all the gushing reviews about comfort and owning an octy vrs for 3 years i thought id be on for a winner. But i can honestly say the vrs felt just as comfortable and not in good way. Reading all the complaints about suspension blocks being left in i raised this with the dealership who replied with a car 2 and a bit years old wouldn't have any left on so i highly doubt they even looked.  I'll be going another dealership for a second opinion because the ride is rock hard to the point where am whincing when i see any imperfections in the road. Its riding on 18s so i know its not going to be s class material but still. Am just hoping the blocks are still in and the ride improves. Good points? Well i think the superb 3 is the best looking family car out there. The 150 engine is quiet, pulls well and is economical. The boot space is second to none. The dsg is spot on too. In my opinion the car looks the part but underneath its a different story. I really am hoping this experience improves over the next few years because am big skoda fan and from previous experience i know they make brilliant cars so fingers crossed!

Sounds like another "transit blocks left in" saga to me -- I came to the Superb from an E-class and the ride is similar, and certainly not rock-hard.

Just pull up the plastic concertina bellows on the front shocks and look if you can see any transport blocks which a brightly coloured plastic donut affair slipped onto the shocker shaft.

Contrary to what the dealer says, it would be impossible for these to simply disappear over time as the bellows would hold them in.

I don't know where the transport blocks are on the back suspension if fitted at all.

If the transport blocks are in this will probably be why you are having so many trim problems as it sounds like it's shaking the car apart.

I can't believe the dealer wouldn't even look, sounds like they are too defensive to me.

What do you mean by out of shape tyres? Deformed, bulging?

I'm not sure I would have coped with 10k miles if the suspension was rock hard and would have been back knocking on the counter about 9500 miles ago.

Have you driven with a tech to see what they think as they drive it or have you taken a test drive in another superb back to back with yours?  I would be pushing for both as you need a good point of comparison to make objective comments.

Only after establishing that reference point  would i be happier saying they are all like that rather than it's the particular car.

Both rear tyres were deformed which i only noticed due to vibrations while on the motorway. Even after 2 visits and a wheel balancing at my local dealership they still couldn't see any issues regarding my tyres. It was only after taking my car to a independent tyre garage that i finally found out what the issue was. With regards to the ride quality, after a month or so of driving it and reading all the storys of blocks being left in i took it back to the dealership who assured me after a technician checking and taking it for a drive the blocks had been removed. I did ask again for it to be checked when it went in for its MOT with the same answer. I have been in another superb only as a front passenger that was riding on 17s and i have to say ride was so much smoother but would 17s and 18s be so much different? Normally i would just go with what they said but after they couldn't even spot deformed tyres(doubt they even checked) i highly doubt they even looked for the blocks. Hopefully after its been looked at by another dealership i'll be able to accept the ride quality.

There is only a small difference in ride quality between 17s and 18s, a lot of people wouldn't notice imo. 18s are noisier because they are wider.

Why don't you check for transit blocks yourself? Jack the front of the car up, and in the wheel arch pull the plastic concertina bellows up from the bottom and look.

I always go for cars with smaller wheels/taller tyres precisely because of the ride issue on UK roads.

Point to bear in mind with Skoda is that part of what we think is poor ride quality is actually noise - these cars are not as well sound-deadened as their VW stablemates, and I suspect the bushing isn’t of the same grade either.

I came to the Superb from an Octavia, and while the torsion beam suspension in the Octy is defintely worse than the Superb’s independent suspension, the noise was of course amplified by a steel beam and poor sound deadening. It made quite a racket on poor roads.

For what it’s worth, I think you’ll find that the Superb does actually ride very well for its class, and taller tyres do help. But it, too, is a bit noisier than it ought to be. That’s the dreaded VW Group hierarchy at work, I’m afraid.

Having just moved on from a car with 18"s (RFT) to non RFT's 17"s there is a big difference in ride comfort and noise, the Superb is far quieter and the ride more compliant.  IMO the Superb actually looks well and not underwheeled on 17's, unusual for such a big car.

Here is Ireland you can actually get 16" wheels, now they really do look poor.

My priority is comfort, some people may prefer a less forgiving set up.

Petrol engine and 17's make for a very quiet and refined drive at all speeds, unlike their diesel siblings.

I changed from a Mk2 to a Mk3 and found the ride significantly better. But the 18" wheels on my Mk2 had 40 profile tyres and those on the Mk3 are 45.  Numerically not much but visually they look much deeper and the ride - probably for that reason is much softer.

Hi, slightly off topic but how would you compare the Superb to the E Class. Just wondering as I am thinking of an E Class Estate for the next car but bit concerned that I would be paying much more just for the badge. Thanks.

I have the 190 4x4 sportline and the ride is spot on. Came from an octy vrs and I can say that was much harsher ride than the sportline superb. However I was running 18” winters and have gone back to my summers for a brief period due to a puncture in one of the winters. And the 19’s do make it slightly harder but defo still much more supple than the octy vrs

as far as this or the Mercedes. I would put this in the same class as the merc and would much rather save a good few grand and have the superb

The Superb meets my needs better than the E-class did -- more space in rear and boot, better equipped, as comfortable and good to drive, and much better value. The badge I don't care about, except that other drivers are nicer to you in a Skoda than a Mercedes...

" Both rear tyres were deformed which i only noticed due to vibrations while on the motorway. "

By deformed, do you mean they were worn on the inside edge & had a sawtooth wear pattern to the tread.

If so, you will need to get the car 4 wheel alligned, otherwise the new tyres will soon go the same way.

My experience with the superb is extremely similar to yours.  Love the way it looks, hate the way it drives. The ride is just awful and its so badly damped and over sprung. NVH is no where what it should be.  I find the dsg awful too but I have the six speed.  Engine pulls like a train though as I have the 190 diesel. Its too noisy at speed though but I put that down to lack of a 7th gear.

I really don't understand the positive reviews of this car. I swear skoda are paying reviewers off. The only slightly accurate one being what car who acknowledge it crashes around a bit and only rate it 3 stars for refinement and ride. I wouldn't even give it that though.  Its quite baffling really as I drove another one that was even worse and that had dcc!

I'm happy with my 2018 1.4Tsi manual SE Estate owned from new. I drive 2017 Scoda Scouts at work and the ride and cabin noise are better in the Superb.  Of course mine is on 215/55 R17 tyres which may help.  The suspension feels a bit softer than the average car. It isn't a sports car but is good over poor surfaces. I find it as comfortable and quiet at motorway speeds as anything else I've driven.

Other than rattling brake pads sorted under warranty nothing has gone wrong with the car.

Enjoying the huge boot and huge rear seat legroom when carrying passengers. Compared to my previous 2012 Octavia Hatch it is a much better car. More refined and plenty of nice to  For a petrol car of it's size the mpg is brilliant. Touches like the telescopic strut holding up the bonnet when checking oil. The door umbrellas,  rear boot light that is also a torch.  Variable boot floor. Fold flat front passenger seat. Etc etc.

Really comfortable for long drives. I drove 720 miles from Glasgow to north Wales and back in a day without any aches and pains and on one tank of fuel.

For a petrol car of it's size the mpg is brilliant. 52mpg on brisk A road driving from Glasgow to the highlands and back.  High 40s at 75mph on  mainly motorway trips. Tank filled tonight - 41mpg overall for 462 miles mixed local driving, longest trip 20 miles at a time with many 5-10 miles or  shorter journeys.

I got mine for just over £18k new with around £1000 of options. Can't see anything near it for value for money.  Perhaps not so much now with prices rises.

Flaws?  At my trim level - SE - the seat fabrics are basic.  Air con when cooling is just adequate and no more.  But heh! I live in Scotland, how often do I need to cool the car?  Maybe I'm just easy to please but my Superb is the best car I have owned and is as good an all round load lugger and long distance driving car  as anything I have driven.
