Well worth checking for battery condition whilst you have access to it.  There are a few threads on here from the last 2-3 months that cover things in more detail.

Incidentally how hard was it to remove the wing?

I have a new one to put on mine at some point.

Not that hard grill, headlight inner arch/flap and unbolt

Still can't source a battery for it. Varta 5/V200H

Anyone got a source?

Solder wires onto the battery pins and use the wires to connect to board, use some silicone sealant to secure battery to board. Come on, use use your imagination and ingenuity!

Had a wee search for soldering batteries. Seems it can be done. Have ordered the 5/V200H and a bottle of soldering acid.

Worth a try.

I hope you mean soldering flux as used on electronic components and not soldering acid as used in the past on plumbing copper and by artists for metal sculptures.

The solder seemingly doesn't stick properly on the batteries (zinc coating) so the acid etches it to allow the solder to bond.

I think you'll not be able to solder directly to the battery casing, it is nickel chrome plated steel. And because it is quite a thick steel case, it will simply sink the heat away, by the time you get the required temperature of around 190 deg C to solder, you will have guaranteed to have damaged the cell.

That is why the battery pins are spot welded on.

If you had got the  battery with pins. If you can't persuade it to fit, get one end soldered into the board then attach a lead to the other pin. The pins can be bent up out the way.

If required, drill a couple small holes on the board taking care not destroy tracks and use a small tywrap to secure the battery, or alternatively fasten the battery on the inside of the case, whatever. Use some silicone sealant to secure and stop the battery moving about.

Good luck.
