Coolant brands

Featured Replies

Hi everybody, I know this has been covered a 1000 times already but just like to be certain. Is this coolant okay for my car please https://www.commaoil.com/passenger-vehicles/products/view/544

I'm guessing yes seeing as it has been approved at G13 standard but I'm just unsure whether the branding matters? Does the G13 stuff from the dealer have an advantage over this stuff? Coz its twice as much in price.

Many thanks,

Tom Jones

I've not checked prices, but as I am lucky enough to live in a soft water area, I just buy G13 conc from VW Group easiest outlet to get to, and that works for me, I've got nothing bad to say about Comma though.

My wife's Polo 1.2TSI is meant to get a cambelt change at 5 years, so that will probably include a water pump - and that normally includes new coolant, so I've not been in the situation to need to change G12/G13 coolant for many many years, although I might consider doing that job on my car as it has a chain - although I do check the coolant's protection wrt to freezing and acidity every other year using a refractometer and specialist test strips.

So if I'm in a hard water area, the ready mixed comma stuff would be ideal would you say? It's a fraction of the cost of the dealers brand and I'm struggling to see a reason why that is

Lets face it, VW Group do not manufacturer that special coolant, so yes just use that - I'm guessing that the coolant has not been changed when the cambelt was replaced - or the waterpump?  Or maybe the waterpump is not driven by the cambelt in these engines.

It has been changed after my cambelt, water pump and head gasket was changed in Nov last year but I was still losing coolant and some bright spark thought it was a good idea to put kseal in it (I'm not the bright spark) so I'm reflushing it to get that out.  Thanks for your help :)

I don't suppose anybody knows the full capacity for a BLT engined cooling system do they? Something tells me its 6.8 liters but not certain?

Thanks

Also, for a thermostat, is a flange the thermostat housing?

Edited by Tomjones1995

BLT is approx 6.8 litres coolant capacity.

Could you elaborate on the thermostat question? The flange is usually the outer part of the actual thermostat.

Yeah, I contacted the vw dealer and asked for a thermostat with the o ring and then I was offered a flange, but id not heard of that so said I needed the housing as they can sometimes crack when removing the thermostat. He had no idea what I was talking about and said there is only a flange which I understand is like a pipe union of sorts or so I've since read

OK will have a look on the parts catalogue for you.

The catalogue does describe the thermosat housing as 'flange'. Part number 038121132D

Oh right okay, thankyou for checking that, I did have a look on there earlier but didn't get these part numbers so I'm glad to of been corrected :)

No probs Tom :)

On my ASZ in the Bora the thermostat housing is actually part label 5 in your pic. Happen to have one in front of me as my engines running at 70C at the moment and bought a new stat which came with the flange and O ring. Wouldn't have thought BLT would be much different. Sits on the front of the engine close to the waterpump.

Oh right okay. So it looks like its part 5 I need then and perhaps Lee's part 20 is for the CTS?

Parts are shown here, but unfortunately the "Use of" column for the first item 8, where I would expect to see BLT mentioned, doesn't mention it. I suspect just a listing error.

Edit: Oh yeah, it's a Polo not a Fabia, back in a sec...

Yep, Lee's part doesn't contain the thermostat.

Yep

That part isn't listed as being for BLT as far as I can see.

EDIT: Just seen where wino said there must be a mistake in the listing.

Ah right, if it doesn't contain the thermostat it can't be the right thing. Sorry about that, Tom.

On all the petrol engines* the stat is up at the head; not really sure why the diesels have it down the front of the block, maybe just lack of space elsewhere.

*Except the AZL 2 litre Mustang crusher..
