Driving abroad after 29-3-19

Featured Replies

Apologies if this has been covered elsewhere: I did a quick scan but didn't find anything.

Anyone who has plans to drive abroad after March 29th should be aware that, if things go badly, they could need some extra documentation.

According to my insurance broker, the companies are taking the position that they will let things run on as at present for "a few weeks". However, if we crash out, the Green Card will probably be reinstated.

Further it may be necessary to have an International Driving Permit.

Hopefully common sense will prevail, even in a no-deal scenario, but it will bear watching.

Drivers here in Ireland have been advised to get a Green Card if they plan to travel to NI/GB after the 29th. The Irish government has stated that they will allow NI drivers at least (not sure about GB) drive here without needing a Green Card.

I suspect the safest option for now is to get a Green Card if you think you will be taking your car outside the UK in the near future.

The UK Government's latest advices here say this; do bear in mind however that the situation is described (politely) as "very fluid" ...

Driving abroad on holiday

You need your Great Britain or Northern Ireland driving licence to drive abroad on holiday.

You can use:

If you’re hiring a car, the hire company may ask for a check code so they can view your driving record.

Check if you need an international driving permit (IDP)

You might also need an international driving permit (IDP) to drive in some non-EU countries. Check if you need an IDP.

Don’t apply for an IDP if you’re moving abroad. You need to get a local driving licence instead.

Driving in Europe after Brexit

If the UK leaves the EU without a deal on 29 March 2019, you might also need an IDP to drive in all EU and European Economic Area (EEA) countries, apart from Ireland. Check if you’ll need an IDP.

Driving in the Republic of Ireland

You can drive in the Republic of Ireland if you have either:

  • a UK driving licence
  • a foreign driving licence, but you usually live in the UK

If you’re banned (disqualified) from driving while in the Republic of Ireland, you might also be banned from driving in the UK.

Advice on driving in specific countries

The AA has advice on driving in specific countries, including information on compulsory equipment.

Next : Check if you need an international driving permit (IDP)

I'd agree that the time to apply for a Green Card, and an IDP (oh yes and I think you should get a GB plate since "EU-UK" registration plates will probably become illegal too) is NOW.

I’ve always got a green card when driving abroad. We are planning a trip to the Nethetlands towards end of April so will need to get up to my local friendly post office for an IDP.

I already have the IDP done the other day (valid for 3 years) except Spain where you need a different IDP. £5.50 a pop in the post offce.

Will get Green Card when I insure my new car in May.

How can you apply for an IDP if you don't know which country you're travelling to yet?

My current one is only valid for Kuwait.

THey are not just valid for one country. Mine is valid for all countires where they allow the 1968 version

Because there are only a few types of IDP, EU for example except Spain I think have the 1968 version and ofr  Spain you have the 1949 version so if you're driving though both you need BOTH IDPs
