Crater 19 inch - opinion

Featured Replies

Hi,

What do you think about 19 ich Crater rims on Karoq? Will the car be too stiff and will not lose very much comfort?

I do not plan to take an active suspension.

Thanks for any help.

The ride will be harder.

Hard and too hard, that's an individual's opinion.

The tyres are very low profile on 19's. Form over function?

Thx.

Do you think 18 inch will be better choice?

Do they actually fit those tyres or do they just spray them on the rims..?

I just broke my teeth thinking about using those on my road!

Thank you guys ;)

I changed from 19" Craters to 17" Triton with Cross Climate and the Karoq has been so much better both ride and feel.  The steering is more accurate and it just feels more together.

I owned a fun Yeti with 17 rims and 225/50 tires and when i got my Karoq i was very dissapointed with the handling on 18 rims 215/50 Bridgestone tires. I swapped the Bridgestone to Continental VikingContact 7 215/50 xl nordic winter tires for this winter and the handling improved a lot, but the bodyroll on the Karoq with 18 rims and 215/50 is way to big compared to my old yeti so I have ordered a set of Crater 19 rims with 235/40 xl for this summer. I hope this will make the car more fun to drive in speeds from 40 to 90 km/h where i do most of my driving, This car needs xl tires with stiffer sidewalls in my opinion. In speeds over 90 km/h and on the motorway the Karoq is better than the Yeti.

I don’t mind my 18’s, look fab and comfortable. Especially around town when pumped up for eco and a load

I have the 19" Craters and as long as you don't inflate them higher than the recommended figures stated inside the petrol cap then the ride seems smoother than my 15" Fabia ones, especially over speed bumps in the road. When I picked up the car the tyres were inflated way too much by the dealer.

I too have the 19" Craters & was a bit apprehensive regarding their comfort. However, a test drive convinced me that all was just fine, & now,  almost 8 months into ownership, I have never altered that opinion. The wheels and the originally fitted Pirelli Cinturato P7's are proving  a great all round combination, so no worries for me !

Hi  When I test drove the Karoq with 19" wheels the ride and handling were fine (felt much like my Yeti 17" 225).  On delivery (from another dealer) my New Karoq with 19" wheels was harsh.  Turned out psi was about 3-4 above recommended.  With correct pressure they feel as comfortable and as good handling as my Yeti which has 225/50 17"  The 19" Craters are 235/40 and Bridgestone.   Interestingly I checked replacement tyres here and the 235/40 are quite expensive but a 245/40 (which will fit fine and within 4% of 235) are considerably lower in price for the same tyre yet 10mm wider.  I couldn't find suitable wider tyres for the 18" wheel option and 215 is too narrow for a Karoq IMO.    The Crater wheel is eight inches across while the 18' and 17' wheels are only 7 inches across.  SO this wheel width and 20 to 30mm wider tyre width gives it considerable more volume to cushion those bumps than if it was a 215 tyre and so compensates a bit for the narrower side wall yet is tighter on the wheel for handling.

I also have 19in Craters with the Pirelli Cinturato 235/40 P7s.  Very comfortable on our Australian roads, but as TrevOz says, you gotta leave them at the recommended pressures.  The P7s are still relatively new (one month since delivery) but the grip is high and the road noise is low.  I specifically asked for a Karoq with the Craters on when we test drove the vehicle before purchase - was a bit worried they'd be 'hard', but they've been brilliant - a good match with the suspension settings.  They also look fantastic with our non-metallic Steel Grey colour.  Mind you, I'll need a second mortgage to replace the tyres at 40,00kms ... :D

Hi Dave Replacing the same  P7 with 235/40 19" is around $50 to $70 dearer than to replace with 245/40 19" P7 per tyre.  As the Craters are 8" wide rather than the skinnier 18" or 17" (@7" wide)  the crater can take even wider tyres than the 235 fitted.  Certainly an option I will consider at the time.  TJJ

Trev - thanks for the advice!

Interesting experience as I threw usually P7s away from my brand new cars as they are noisy and do have VERY average grip on wet. My Skoda Superb always slide on them on roundabouts as example.

@sebekdj  In the Czech home market basic Karoq come with 215/60 R16 95V wheels

Going up 3 rim sizes is going to do nothing for comfort.

If your local roads are as smooth as billiard tables, then fine go for 19s.

But if rough surfaces and potholes exist, and you want comfort, then no.

I have to smile......the smooth roads are reserved for the furthest flung outposts of the EU, paved with UK funds......here at home we have what could be the worst in Europe.

Hi , Berisford & Surreyjohn,    tyre wall height is not the only factor that can effect comfort.  Width also does as the volume of air between the rim and road matters.  All things being equal a 215 tyre will be less comfortable than a 235 tyre.

Also the 17 and 18 rims on the Karoq are only 7 inches wide while the 19 inch are 8 inches giving even more air volume to comfort the ride.  But the tighter side wall gives tighter handling and the wider tyre gets more rubber on the road for better grip.  Down side to the 19s is narrower tyres give better fuel economy  and less likely to aquaplane.    Though tyre pressure is more critical on the 19 craters, I find only a few psi over ideal gives a harsh ride while no tyre should be under inflated.    The ride and handling on my Karoq seems much the same as on my 17" 225 Yeti. I still have the Yeti so comparison is not just a memory.   I have read that the handling on the 17 and 18 rims  is not the best.  But of cause road conditions, suspension, load and driving style all have an impact and its always a bit subjective.  On the P7 tyres I had these on my Yeti and I thought they were a bit noisy although grip was fine.  Replaced with

Michelin Primacy 3 ST with the ST for silence.  These are considerably quieter than the old P7.  I have Bridgestone on the Karoq at the moment but would like to replace them with 245 STs when the time comes.

The Crater wheels are nice, but I would be afraid it will be quite hard on the road. I've bought same wheel design in 17", it is HRS brand, see link. I have them incl. center covers with Skoda black logo. It maybe will not look that great as 19", but will be good compromise for comfort, look and cost. Will have them with Dunlop Sport Maxx RT 2 tyres.

Love 19th. You can find very comfortable tyres in 235/40/R19  or 225/45/R19 sizes.  I personaly using 245/40/R19 and Karoq can take 245/45/R19 without any issue.  The only problem with 19th is that brakes , especially rear brakes are too small
