Hight above sea-level...?

Recommended Posts

Dear Forum

Perhaps I'm alone in this but although I find it interesting to know my elevation, I find it irritating to have it displayed in yards.

Yards are for measuring distance. I'm bad at mental arithmetic - so turning yards to meters (if I must) or feet (better) in my head is quite a challenge.

Is anyone else annoyed by this? More importantly, has anyone found a way of changing to it feet?

3 feet = a yard.

How high are you going,

is it anything above 1000 yards (3,000ft) in the UK in your car?

1. Indeed so!

2. A few feet higher that the ground under my tyres

3. I really don't know

Back to my main question: has anyone managed to change the readout from yards to feet?

:)

I've never found an option or a coding/adaptation to change it from yards to feet, nor have I seen anything posted here or anywhere else.

You'll just have to mentally multiply by 3.

Sadly, that level of mathematical effort doesn't leave me with enough spare processing-capacity to remain safely in control of a moving vehicle. Even with Lane Assist on.

I note from a comment on another forum that it seems that they might not really be yards at all - but in fact meters: i.e. the Imperial 'conversion' is no more than a  substitution of 'yds for 'm'.

If true, I'm not sure whether it is more, or less, irritating.

3 feet 3", near enough.

The UK never changed to kilometers.   Just Metric Light.

Car shows MPG and pumps show fuel price in litres.

What astonishing insights - some stuff I'd never have realised: though I admit I did know that we measure light intensity in lux nowadays, rather than foot-candles.

It's almost as if my original post ended with '...but if your view is that my query is pointless, just post some really obvious stuff which you think for some reason is relevant.'

It is less impressive than the diagnosis of persectuory delusions I got in response to my queries about the central locking, when I first bought the Octavia3 last year!

The bottom line is that unless some programmer at Skoda (or their supplier) have included an option to display height in feet then without getting the firmware hacked then you'll just have to live with yards (which MIGHT just be metres) - or change your car?

I know that's not what you wanted to hear, but that's the reality.

Anything is possible with software - so long as you have access to the code and programming tools, oh and the hardware supports it.

I think you do have a point there.  We live in a confusion of measurements, I grew up with yards feet and inches also chains furlongs and miles - I could go on.

Until the world can agree a universal system of measurement, probably not in many of our lifetimes, we are stuck with trying to convert from one to another, when on the go, as best as we can.   Having lived on the Continent for many years ,I can deal with most measurements, distance, fluids and so on, reasonably well but not being the best mathematician, I tend to use a sort of rule of thumb when trying to convert mentally.

That's all back to sleep:talking:

The height above sea level on my Kodiaq is in feet. The yards measurement is the scale the map is zoomed into. I’ve got mine set to imperial, can be changed to metric if desired.

My dear friend, if the biggest problem in your life is this then I am more than happy to pay for you to fly to the UK where I will collect you from whatever airport you land at and transport you to a hospital specialising in children who have been hideously burned/scarred where you can see some real first world problems.  Small children with life changing injuries.

I will then, of course, transport you back to the airport of your choice where you can depart to your place of origin and reflect upon what you have witnessed.

PM me and I will happily set up your flight to the UK.

I look forward to hearing from you :D

The world already has a universal measurement system! SI units (metric) are formally adopted by every nation in the world, with the exception of Myanmar, Liberia and... USA.

Even the U.K.  has adopted metric and yet we’re stuck with a rubbish mish-mash unfortunately, predominantly because lots of older people (sorry but it’s true) get sentimental about using yards, pints, pounds etc which are ridiculous units of measurement. Not least because they’re all defined by metric units now anyway

To be fair, this response would do for most of the posts on forums such as this, so I'm not sure it's fair to post it only on this thread.

I note that you haven't posted any really obvious stuff that you think for some reason is relevant - but it might be that views on measurements related to geography/cartography would be more use coming from someone who is aware that Manchester is actually in the UK.

:)

This is all very pertinent. I think I can live quite happily with yards for altitude if they are indeed actually meters.

I imagine that the amount of programming required is beyond what one can do with VCDS. It's interesting to note that the newer vehicles do indeed use feet when set to God's own units.

PS: I've just checked. With distance set to miles I get 60yds. Set to Km, I get  55m. So it looks as though I'll need to extend my knowledge of the 3x table.

So lets not ever try to improve or fix anything, because there are always much worse problems?

What did the OP do to warrant this response? There are thousands of other posts on here you could have picked.

My 2018 vRS 230 shows Altitude in Feet if set to Imperial Units or Metres if Metric is selected.

My 2015 Elegance (with an Amunsden MIB1) shows Altitude in Yards if set to Imperial or Metres if set to Metric.

Maybe it's another MIB1 vs MIB2 difference?
