diesel or petrol manual or automatic

Featured Replies

ok going to be in the market soon to replace my Skoda octavia estate mk 2 1.6cr manual that I use for a taxi

question is do I go for another diesel with the egr, dpf issues or do I go for the 14 petol engine and does it have less problems

next up are the automatic dsg gearboxes ok

I’m thinking as a taxi your mileage must be pretty high so surely a diesel makes sense? It might be lots of shorter trips but they won’t be cold starts all the time.

As for dsg, I’d say you want to make it as comfortable and easy if you’re driving all day, so why wouldn’t you get an automatic?

Done about 136,000 miles now. Only me drives it.

Tend to buy them 3 years old at 50,000 mile and sell them 4 years later with 150,000

Tend to get best reliability and costing during that period

Couldnt bear paying out for a new cab to be used as a taxi

For use around town I don't know why you would consider anything other than the 1.6 diesel with DSG.

For lots of towns nobody would consider a 1.6 TDI as a Taxi / Hire Car.

They go for a Petrol Hybrid.

The reason being kind of obvious.

A 1.6TDi or 1.4TSi DSG will have the 7 speed dry clutch DQ200.

Would I expect to get 150000 urban taxi miles out of a DQ200 without issues?  No.

A 2.0TDi DSG would be my taxi choice or swap brands and go hybrid.

Taxi firm I use regularly have 1.6tdi Rapids and Octavias. They buy new then run them to 250,000 miles before selling them. Some are then bought by owner drivers who do work for that firm and do another 200k ! They also have some 1.0tsi Octavias.

I reckon you could get another 100k from your mk2.

Personally I can vouch for the 1.4tsi. Mines done 50k Miles trouble free and I plan on taking it to 10 years old/150k miles.

^^^ Makes sense when working day and night and the diesel engines are kept hot where there is lots of work.

The issue comes where they are cold starting lots because switched off when waiting for work.

Then the DPF is an issue, and sitting ticking over (idling) is really not 'simply clever' at some taxi ranks in some towns.

I can, it’s the last thing you should do withva dpf diesel!

Petrol and manual if you want reliability and economy. No brainer.

Ok then I bow to your superior knowledge.
