Featured Replies

Anybody know how to interpret what the hell is wrong?

I ran a torque pro test  scan on the insignia as something just felt off in how it was running on way to work earlier.

No fault codes code under the tests i got the below..

Anybody know what that translates to so i can figure out whats actually wrong?

Its a 2litre cdti a20dth engine.

But, yes.. i know...

Currently parked up at my second indy mechanic beside one of our offices. Theres a definite rattle from the engine somewhere that i dont like and neither does he :(

So... anybody got a reconditioned a20dth engine (160bhp version please) sitting in their shed they dont need? I can offer a not quite completely broken one as a swap?

Lots of metal in the oil filter when he pulled it out after lunch.. looks very likely another GM fatality of the cdti bottom end bearings deciding to eat themselves.. have a fairly big expensive decision to mull over for a couple of days.. :wall:

not entirely sure the test failures in my op were directly related to what is actually going on (in a more serious capacity than a maybe bad sensor), i think it was just my paranoia kicked in early enough that something felt off... highly likely if id kept driving it today I might be sitting on the side of the M8 somewhere around Fermoy now contemplating the most efficient way to set fire to the car in a rage..

Luckily i was at one of our Depots and there was a pool van available to borrow... :whew:

That's not good news and it appears that the bottom end bearings can be an issue with these engines. How old is the car and how many miles / km has it covered?

2009, i bought Nov '16.

+/- a couple of hundred...155k miles (248km )

SE spec so plenty toys just a **** engine, even if it does make 160bhp.

Seems yeah, this bottom bearing thing is a common flaw, as a result of the re boring to make it 2litre from the 1.9 in the vectra. They never increased oil gallery sizes so not enough oil flow for the increase in stress etc.

Along with a lot of other crap quality bits... (egr's, etc)

Having a look online, a reconditioned engine is around 1200-1500 quid.

It would be nigh on the same to have mine stripped and refurbed.

Whats it worth as a trade in? Probably  2.5-3k with a working engine...

Without.... about 7-800.

Was it on my maybe change this year list? Yeah... when i had a few quid built up toward the back end of the year.

Sell it for scrap and go the bangernomics route for a few months until you have the cash for a proper replacement?

1.9tdi Octy 2 in Tipperary listed for 1950 Euro but looks like a firm "bid in the bum" might do it.

Thats where i got the insignia :D

So, given Gerhardt's Cholesterol problems from eating his own bottom end bearings the other day, ive decided he's going on the donor list... to be a donor...

I cant justify the cost of repair and then the permanent worry of "when will it die again..."

Always a tough call but from what you've said the best one in the circumstances.

Does this now make him Gerhardt-less? :)

Tbh, it was a much tougher decision to trade in the octavia for it in 2016.

The insignia is comfy for long drives, loads of power and toys, but... a bit souless. I have never bonded with it the way i did with Donkey, it wS always just a car.

It always felt fragile, despite the size and chunkyness.I towed one trailer with it, once, and it felt unhappy about doing it.. and it wasnt a particularly heavy trailer.

The list of mechanical things ive had to do in 2 yrs also just annoyed me compared to the octy over 4 1/2.

Ive already told my BIL  to get shot of his asap.. its 3yrs younger (2012), so at least has some value left in it, but even he has started to hit the problem list ive had now..

Problem now is what to do... atm around here mk2 octys are all 1.6 105bhp for too much money. Superbs are the same.

Go much older and itll cost more to tax and insure than buy it, which means i would struggle to get comp insurance for work mileage.

Go a bit newer and ill need a bridging loan :(

You looking for weasel or petrol?

Anywhere around urban areas in Northern England - and probably the Midlands, too, weasels are getting very cheap as pollution zones begin to raise their heads.  Also, anything less than cosmetically perfect attracts substantial markdowns.  We've bought two 2007 weasel mk2 estates in the last year, both with some cosmetic issues (fixable) and both at around 120k miles. One cost £400 and the other £700!

Depending on your vehicular preferences and budget it may be worth asking the wider Brisky community to do some initial looking for you.

I knew that. If the difference in cost for a car here vs home is less than the cost of a return trip you're still ahead of the game...

Aye.. but..

VRT has to be paid on the imported vehicle, mightnt be much om an older one, but still adds to cost.

Flight and Ferry trip over n back.. another couple of hundred

Road tax on a pre 2008 1.9 is... €670!

Insurers jack the price of insurance up on an older vehicle, and imported vehicle..

I have been looking about abit.. its one of them weird things where im caught between saving on cost an older car but getting hammered on running cost or bigger outlay to get down running cost.

Ugh... i may just have to do a lot of man maths tomorrow in work and make some decisions..

Brexit uncertainty means Sterling is getting a pounding at the moment, so there could be savings there. When I brought in my Superb three years ago, I saved about €3k even after travel costs, plus it was a lot easier to find the spec I wanted in the UK.

Revenue have a VRT calculator on their website which is pretty spot on for most cars, so it shouldn't be hard to figure out total cost.
