Sounds like bells (Vrs engine)

Featured Replies

I have a (new to me) 16 plate VRS 230 and I have noticed and now can't stop noticing what sounds like bells, or a metallic rattling sound when accelerating or putting a load on the engine. I've read all about the issue on VWs and Audis but I'm not sure if this is the same noise or not or whether it is something more serious?

I might try and record it at some point but I suspect it will be difficult to record due to normal engine noise.

Is it only in Sport mode you notice it? Wondering whether it's the sound Aktor??

No, it's in all modes. It sounds a bit like pinking but is a continuous noise.

High pressure fuel pump maybe? Wifes wee 1.2tsi fabia was like this.

I’m not sure, did that sound like a metal tinkly noise or kind of like bells ringing quickly?

Chain driven cams in this car I think. Could be that. Drive my escort years ago like that for about 18 months before getting rid for other reasons. Was always worse going left.

Do they have a lifed cam warranty? Surely a 3yr old car shouldn't have cam issues. Even if outside the original warranty I'd be throwing the 'not fit for purpose routine'.

So, I've been out and recorded it, if you listen from 20 seconds you can hear the noise (at 23s) I am hearing, this was gentle acceleration in a highish gear and it seems to occur at 1500rpm, only seems to be when the engine is under light load and turbo hasn't spooled up.

I can't hear anything unusual in that sound clip, certainly not anything I would describe as bells or metallic jingling or rattling.

You need to listen carefully, it's quite subtle in the recording. Think I'll take it to the dealers to see if they can see anything.

Do you have access to VCDS or can you get the dealer to check the car with service software? Are there any fault codes? Is the cam chain driven on this model? What is the car's measured cam chain angle? That value may reveal whether there's an issue with the cams, chain or tensioner.

Does the engine sound rattly starting from cold or is there a ticking sound at idle? Either of these might point towards the cam tensioner if it's a chain driven cam.

It was picked up and taken to the dealers today, but of course they couldn’t hear the noise.

Doing a bit of googling and I reckon it’s the same issue the golf r and Audi s3 cars have in that it’s a turbo issue. There seems to be a service bulletin for vw that involves replacing the turbo and doing something to the air intake, I doubt if Skoda have this so I may just have to live with it.

Im going to have to take it to the dealers and demo it to them myself I think.

Sound has got worse, so I took it to the dealers and they were able to verify the sound. They’ve had it for a day and said it’s the turbo actuator. The warranty ran out yesterday but they booked the job card in on Friday when I was there so should all be covered by Skoda. They’ve kept it overnight as the ran out of time.

After reading the extensive Audi thread it sounds like Audi just say it’s a noise it makes. What’s odd is that there’s no

mention of it being a Skoda issue as well, unless it’s specific to the pre-fl 230?

Lets see what tomorrow brings!

That'll be the indicators - to me anyway.🐭

Well Skoda are going to replace the turbo. No idea how long it takes them to get the parts in though so it will be off the road for a while now.

Won’t play on my iPhone ?

I'd a failing turbo on my Mk2 2l diesel. It sounded VERY loud , just like a WW2 air raid siren as it rose and fell in pitch with the engine revs.

Skoda have replaced the turbo under warranty and the sound has gone, hopefully it doesn’t come back.

Just hoping ping they put it all back together properly!
