Boot closing and hatchback issues

Noticed the other day that my boot lid wasn't shut properly,  opened and closed again and realised that the electric pull down wasn't working,  also found (not surprisingly) that the hatch wasn't triggering so can't open that at all. I'm assuming that this is most likely related to broken wiring where the hatch opens (although the wiring for the pull down and operating switch don't seem to go into the hatch). Problem is that, as the hatch can't be opened, I can't get at the wiring to check.

Is there any trick to opening the hatch?
