Removing the cat on a vRS

Featured Replies

Miaaaoooww,

I'm tampering with the idea of just removing the cat on the vrs. with no MOT being due in the near future and Jason's sailed through it with no cat anyway.

Just a few quick questions if I may:

  • Powerflow will be fine?
  • Any power gains because it'll be less restrictive?
  • What does it sound like with no cat?
  • How much can I expect to pay?
  • That's it!!!!

Thanks

I reckon 1bhp.

Why not see about a decated miltek downpipe?

if you've no plans for modding the rest of the exhaust, a powerflow decat pipe is worthwhile to free up the exhaust a bit. Around £100 fitted at a powerflow dealer and is good for what it does.

BUT, if you plan to get a complete system at some point hang fire. I highly DON'T recommend going for the straight through pipe (because I want to be the only one :P)

You don't have to worry about the MOT as it's just a particulate test which is largely unaffected by the cat. Actually, saying that, how did Jason's smog-monster sail through the MOT?!

It hasn't yet. :P Watch this space on Thursday. :) It passed 2 MOTs with the pd100 engine in remapped and decatted. And that smoked quite a bit as well.

Jason, if I just get a decat pipe then from powerflow for

It might help with spool-up a bit, but in terms of gain 1bhp might be about right. It just slightly derestricts the exhaust. I doubt noise will be altered really as the silencer and backbox will still soak up some, but it might be marginally more rumbly on full wide open throttle. ;)

Why did you do it then if you dont mind me asking :o

Whats the point 1bhp per

I did it and the backbox, as it's always good to do these mods before going to jabbasport. As you're unlikely to be tweaking the map real term gains will be limited. For me it made the difference between a 147bhp remap (done on standard exhaust) and a 154bhp remap (with decat and powerflow backbox) So for me it was more like 7bhp for £100, well actually £270 as the backbox was £170 supplied & fitted.

Also, the noise is a bonus factor as well, not just increases in geegees. :D

Ahhhh, oh wise one it's becoming clearer now :D

It becomes rather cloudy when I boot it though. :D

Jason, this will be of no use because I can't remember the product name, but a decent messers shop should be able to dig you out a bottle of diesel replacement stuff that doesn't smoke at all - used on HGV's at test time all over the place - just run yours almost empty - put whole tub of smoke-free-stuff in and voila - MOT pass

Thought diesels didn't need cat's to pass MOT - some odd legal thing.

Petrols do, diesels don't?

Well, as it doesn't really smoke on idle anyway, I'm not in the slightest worried about the MOT. It really only does smoke on load, and just revving to 3000 while in neutral does not lead to clouds of smoke. And even if there were I believe that the constituents of that smog cloud are not gases that they test for. Might be wrong, but with 2 "flew through" emmissions tests already, I'm not worried.
