From variable to fixed schedule?

Featured Replies

I bought an (awesome) Octavia with almost 100K KM and I have a variable service schedule. Will the car let me know when the next service is due? Actually, I would now like to have it serviced yearly and thus go with the fixed schedule. How does one change that? Should I just ask the garage to do it next time it gets serviced? Thanks!

Check out the awesome handbook it should have come with, it details the procedure.

Resetting the service through the display, as shown above, will also permanently change the service regime from variable to fixed. Changing back to variable requires a software change.

The procedure is similar for non MFD displays and the varies slightly between model years. See your handbook.

Which is what the OP wants to do...

What is different on a 2010 to a 2007?

Have you looked in your handbook or service manual as I'm reasonably sure both the process for checking when the next service is due and how to reset the service reminder are both documented there.

As that vehicle has MFD/Maxidot, maybe the OP just has the basic display which doesn't give you the ability to change it?

The basic display (like mine) does allow you to do it by turning the knob clockwise a couple of times to the service display and then pressing the knob in. I have done it accidentally a couple of times while doing other things.

The handbook says

"Resetting Service Interval Display
It is only possible to reset the Service Interval Display, if a service message or at
least a pre-warning is shown on the display of the instrument cluster."

and

"The data displayed is the same after resetting the display with flexible service
intervals (QG1) is displayed as that for a vehicle with fixed service intervals (QG2)."

Translated, it means it will set it to fixed service whether it was flexible or fixed before,

Wasn't aware of that.

My vehicle was originally set up from the factory for Long Life servicing as I would be doing 20k+ a year. Damn thing decided I needed a service at 13k and at approximately the same amount of months, which is very inconvenient when working away from home 7 days on, 7 days off.

I then got the garage to change it to fixed to make it easier for me to calculate when it would require servicing.

I know RTFM gets quoted a lot, but when you take into account the Owners Handbook supplied with my vehicle doesn't even contain any info on the actual engine fitted to my vehicle (103kw/140bhp 2.0PD TDi) I tend to ask on here for info, or as a very last resort, the dealerships rather than RTFM!

FFS!

This all seems a bit strange as on the MK1 the service interval fixed or variable is done via the coding of the speedo unit and without VCDS you can't change it afik ?

Mk2 is different (in so many ways.

Can go from variable to fixed but not vice-versa with dashboard button.

Why would you need to change to fixed to have yearly servicing? Just get the car serviced same time every year. I have variable on my 2007 2.0 TDI and believe this is preferable, as it is telling me when the car actually needs a service whereas fixed seems kind of arbitrary. Is there a risk that a car on variable may not be getting serviced frequently enough? I wonder about this as my car always goes way over a year between services, and the time intervals seem to be increasing, as this has been my second car for the last three years covering a greatly reduced mileage.

Variable servicing has a maximum 2 years or ~18k miles between servicing.

As most people suggest a yearly service is good for a car, it's not ideal for low mileage car to wait two years. Obviously you could make a note and book the car in every year regardless of mileage but I think people like having a reminder 😉

It's your call but if it's doing less than 10k a year, I'd probably put it on fixed.

My call, as you say, and I feel inclined to keep it on variable. If variable was not fit for purpose, why would Skoda offer it? The car is almost 12 years old and not my main vehicle, so I hesitate to spend money on it that I find difficult to justify. In truth I don't have much need for a second car, and am only doing around 10,000 miles yearly in the other car (2015 Scout on fixed intervals). With this one I am doing under 3,000 miles yearly. I have been thinking that it doesn't make much sense to keep a second car, but recently it came in handy when the Scout was off the road for a few days for accident repairs. I could have had a hire car but my dogs would have messed it up. It was my company car from new and best car I ever had (except maybe the Scout), and I am reluctant to let it go.
