Excessive Resonance in cabin at ~1000rpm

Featured Replies

My 65 plate MY16 L&K (2.0TDI 190) is going into my local dealer for a couple of things in a week or so, including hopefully getting the nasty resonance / vibration in the dashboard area sorted.

It happens at approx 950-1200rpm, and is very annoying indeed.  I can live with it normally but in slow moving traffic it is really intrusive as the car is constantly in that rev band.

I’m sure I have read on here something about a fix, it seems to be coming mostly from the central dashboard / centre console area, maybe where is joins the bulkhead or around the centre speaker area.

Although the car is just out of warranty, Skoda UK have agreed to fund some investigation (and hopefully subsequent rectification) of this issue, so if anybody has any experience of this issue, and what was required to fix it, that would be much appreciated.  It seems to vary a little, some days it isn’t as bad, but is usually at its worst when the engine is fully warmed up and in slow moving traffic.

Does anyone know whether Skoda issued a TPI for this, or similar?

I had this on one that I test drove. I've heard if it before, think it is an aircon pipe or something and is a known issue. Hopefully an easy fix.

On the top of the dash there's a central speaker and an adjoining windscreen de-mister vent; push them down whilst the vibration is occurring and see if that the source.

My dealer still had a vent assembly on back-order as they were sure that was the source of a similar, annoying vibration.  I found it to be the this vent cover vibrating with the speaker cover; I applied some Silent Coat absorber foam to the area where the surfaces mate and it solved the problem.  You need to carefully remove the speaker cover with a trim removal tool or similar, to gain access (or just let the dealer do it :))

My vibrates between 2000-2500 rpm. Been doing it for ages. Skoda looked at the car 5 times each time saying it was fixed. The last time was 2 days before the warranty run out and basically said if it’s not fixed this time then it won’t be because your warranty has expired.

Guess what... it still does it. So I’ve just had to learn to live with it. For reference mines a 2016 2.0tdi 190.

My 2017 16.tdi DSG suffers from this and is getting progressively worse. It happens between 1500 and 2500 rpm and more prominent in Sport mode as this obviously hangs onto the gears longer. I'ts going in for an oil service on Monday and have asked them to have a look but I don't hold up much hope as it's good old Arnold. Is there any documented evidence of a problem relating to the engine are as I'm convinced that's where it's coming from?(Google search brings up all sorts of issues on different components including cabin)

Surely if they have failed to fix a problem while the car was within warranty, they can’t just wash their hands of it when the warranty expires?

That’s what I was told. Basically the service receptionist explained the Skoda are very strict on the warranty and that once 3 years is up that’s it. The car went in for mot on the Friday and the car warranty was up on the Sunday so because of that they did the investigation and warranty work on the Friday and Saturday and left the mot until the Monday.

Its not not right I did think about raising it with Skoda but they vibration has been “fixed” so many times I just don’t think they know what else to do. My suspicion has been it’s from the dashboard but they always end up looking at the pipes that attach to and come through the bulkhead.

They cannot just call time on a persistent issue because it baffles them.  Because it has been "fixed" so many times is exactly the reason I would be taking it up with Škoda.

Out of interest what tyres are on and have you had them on since you discovered the problem. I had same problem then changed from cheap winter tyres to Uniroyals all round. This has basically cured the vibration I was getting. Possibly down to poorly balanced tyres in the first place?
